Algorithmic Game Theory capstone open for all to register

FYI, we have released CSE 490Z, the Algorithmic Game Theory course for registration. There are about 20 spaces available right now. Please see the course description for more information. The add code has been removed (even if it looks like it’s still on there, it is not restricted)

New (theoretically-oriented) Capstone Course for Fall 2011: Algorithmic Game Theory

In this course, we will use the tools of game theory to understand the incentive structure and strategic behavior of players in the brave new world we live in. We will study the foundations of the field known as algorithmic game theory, which lies at the intersection of game theory, economics and computer science, and learn about its applicability to the strategic and technological issues that arise in electronic commerce and in resource allocation in the Internet.

The theory we develop will help us address questions such as: What game theoretic ideas underlie companies like Facebook, Google, yelp, eBay, etc? How can you make the most money selling your used textbooks on eBay? What are the economics of email spam? What do game theory and the Paris subway have to do with Internet routing? How does Google find what you’re looking for and how do they make money doing so?

Home Networking Capstone Demos, 3:30pm Wed June 1 in the Atrium

You are cordially invited to see what we have been up to this quarter! David

WHAT:   481m Home Networking Capstone Project Tour
DATE:   Wednesday, June 1, 2011
TIME:   3:30pm – 5:00pm
PLACE:  The Atrium
HOSTS:  Ratul Mahajan (MSR), David Wetherall, John Zahorjan, and Colin Dixon

The modern home is a hotbed of game consoles, TVs, smartphones, cameras, remotely controllable lights and locks, and many more networked computers. It is, in fact, one of the key computing environments of the future. But how will we write programs that run in the home? And what will they do?

Come and join MC Colin Dixon as he takes us on a tour of the home of the future as imagined and built by students in the 481m capstone. The tour will start at 3:30 and last for 30 mins, followed by unstructured time to interact with the teams and demos. See and be amazed by these projects:

-Who’s at my Door? Live feed and a record of the day from your front porch to your
phone or any screen in your house

-RoomSense, providing a user’s in-home location context for smarter home applications

-Intuihome, intuitive control of devices via gestures with 2D and 3D cameras

-Spooky Action at a Distance, a system for enabling remote connectivity
to the home, despite NATs and firewalls

-Networked Alarm, waking the user with lights and music and adjusting to calendar
events and traffic

-Network Usurper, transparently reconfigures the network to control data
flow and access to devices

We would like to thank Microsoft Research and Google for support, including equipment, that made this course possible.

Capstone Pre-Registration now open – Algorithmic Game Theory added

I’m re-posting the capstone message because we accidentally left off the Algorithmic Game Theory capstone this fall. If you want to take that course, please go back into the survey to submit your answers again. You should be able to resubmit by going to the survey linked on the capstone page. Information about the Game Theory capstone is linked there as well.

We’ll send a separate email soon about how to apply for the animation project course series.

The capstone registration form is now open :

http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/ugrad/academics/capstone.html I’ve posted information below on the robotics capstone, every other course should have a link to previous course offerings.  Most capstones require you to have completed at least CSE 332, and one or two 400 level courses as the goal is to “cap” your CSE experience. However, some faculty are more flexible than others. So you can always put your name down and then talk with the faculty as the course approaches.

First registration priority will go to students graduating. We’ll attempt to give everyone who fills out the survey their first or 2nd choice capstone. If there is still space available, we will open it during Junior registration for any students who did not register during this time period to add a capstone, or to take a 2nd capstone.

We’ll send results around June 10th.  Add codes will be sent out during that quarter’s registration period.

2011-2012 Capstones:

CE Hardware Track Capstone:

CE Software Track Capstones:

CSE 481 Robotics Capstone
The Humanoid Robot Imitation Learning Challenge
Autumn 2011

Course description:
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to program a humanoid robot to imitate human actions and learn new skills from human demonstration using video from a Kinect RGB+depth camera. Students will work in groups to tackle the various sub-problems of human motion capture from video, control of the humanoid robot, and application of probabilistic reasoning and machine learning to the problem of learning from human demonstration.

[cs-ugrads] A job offer question

———- Forwarded message ———-

From: Ed Lazowska <lazowska@cs.washington.edu>
Date: Fri, May 6, 2011 at 7:37 PM
Subject: [cs-ugrads] A job offer question
To: Cs-Ugrads <cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu>

I’ve been asked to write a short article on the current job market for computer science and computer engineering graduates.

If you have any data that would help me make the point that things are hot, would you please send it to me?  I will not use your name, and you do not need to identify specific companies – I’m *not* asking you to violate any confidentiality that an employer may have requested.  (Although it would be very helpful to know if the company was from this region or from another part of the country.)

“Stories” that would be helpful might include:

– An extraordinarily high salary

– An extraordinarily high signing bonus

– Multiple companies fawning over you

Please let me hear from you ASAP.  Again, I will *not* violate your privacy/confidentiality.  I would just like to take the opportunity to make the point that things are hot.

Research Night and more!

Hi everyone,
I’d just like to make sure you know about two upcoming events:

Research Night – May 19th
Interested in going to graduate school or getting involved with undergraduate research? If so, come to research night.  We will have a panel in EEB 037, 4:30pm-5:30pm with undergraduates, graduates and staff to answer your questions on the topic.  This will be followed by a poster session in the Atrium at 5:30pm-7:30pm where you can mingle with graduate students and discuss their projects. It is a great opportunity to find a project for the summer, as well as for fall of next year.  Light refreshments will be provided.
ACM-W Canoe Trip – TBD
ACM-W plans an awesome canoe trip and picnic every spring.  It’s a nice way to get to know your fellow CS majors while paddling about in Lake Washington.  They’re having a doodle to decide which day to have it, so please vote and tell them when you’re free: http://doodle.com/9rshss2p2eh8pia7. (PS. Don’t be deterred by the ‘W’! Guys are totally invited to attend).
We’re also working on planning an awesome Spring Barbecue for you, so keep an eye out for that 🙂
Thanks,

-Mary Pimenova
