Reminder: Prospective Grad Student Panel & Meetup this Thursday!

Hi CSE Undergrads!

Are you planning on applying to grad school soon? Even if you’re just thinking about applying in the future, it can really help to know other people who are going through the same process.  Please join us for a panel and informal meetup on Thursday November 8th from 4-5pm in CSE 691 (Gates Commons).
We’ll provide a meeting space, snacks, and a panel of graduate students who have successfully navigated the application process and want to share their advice for success.  You’ll have time to hear their stories, ask them questions, and meet other students who can share tips, proofread essays, network, etc. Our graduate advisor, Lindsay Michimoto, will also be present to help answer your questions.
Please RSVP (if you haven’t already) at: https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/jpesicka/181749
If you can only make it to half of the meeting because of class, that’s fine!  Come as long as you can. If you can’t make this event at all but are still interested in meeting people, please RSVP “no” at the link above and I’ll try to connect you with undergrad/grad students who were there.
Thanks! Please email me with any questions.

Applying to Grad School? Meet Other Students Who Are Too!

Hi CSE Undergrads,

We have received several requests from students applying to graduate school asking if we could introduce them to other students who are also going through this process. We thought this was a great idea, and would like to open this up to everyone. We’re thinking of hosting an event where all prospective graduate students in the department can meet and share tips, proofread essays, network, etc. We’ll also invite current graduate students in our department, so they can share with you what they did to get into their programs.

Who: All CSE undergrads considering grad school, especially those of you planning on applying in the near future.
What: Informal meetup (with snacks!) to connect with other undergrads going through the same process and with graduate students who want to share their advice for success.
When/Where: TBD in early November. Please fill out the survey if you are interested so we can get an estimate of how many people would like to come and what days/times would be best.

Again, if this sounds like something you’d like to attend, PLEASE RESPOND to the catalyst survey below. Filling out this survey doesn’t mean you have to attend the event. We’re just trying to gauge who would like to participate and what days work best.

CSE 497: Undergraduate Research Seminar – now on the time schedule!

The CSE Undergraduate Research Seminar is now on the time schedule. It’s listed under CSE 497 (1 cr, CR/NC), and will be offered on Fridays at 12:30. Please sign up if you are interested in learning about current research projects in the department. Undergrads who have already participated in research are encouraged to sign up as well, and would have the opportunity to present their own research experience to the seminar.

Brief Course Description: This course aims to get current undergraduates interested in CSE related research topics by exposing them to projects that are currently going on in the department. Additionally, this course gives current undergrads a venue to discuss their research with other students outside of their research area.

A typical 50 minute meeting is primarily lead by a grad student or undergrad who is currently doing research. The majority of class time is devoted to the presenter talking about one primary topic with the possibility of a second. The primary discussion topic is related to their research area. Following the research discussion, further dialog and discussion will be opened up for entire class participation.

Student Responsibilities: At the end of the quarter, each student must write a single page reflection on a research area discussed that they found the most interesting and why. Additionally, students who are currently doing research are highly encouraged to sign up for a presentation, but not required.
