Whitepages Tech Talk

HOW TO GET THE RIGHT JOB FOR THE RIGHT REASONS AND ENJOY IT AND BE PRODUCTIVE ONCE YOU GET THERE By Dr. Steve Hanks, Principal Data Scientist, Whitepages.com

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2014, 6:00 TO 7:00 PM ROOM EE125

Let’s face it, getting a job is easy for people in the right field, going to the right school. You, in other words. But this happy combination can lead to a kind of complacency and a job-search strategy like “wait for them to come to me and take the one that sounds sexiest.” I will try to convince you to take a somewhat deeper and more systematic approach, and give you some tips on how to do it.

Delphix Tech Talk

UW alumni Per Larsson (’13) and Brian Donohue (’14) will be speaking about the interesting and challenging technical problems they are working on at Delphix, from systems-level development to user experience design, and everything in between. They will also expand on what it means to work within an engineering culture of end to end ownership, holistic engineering and mentorship.

There will be plenty of food and swag to go around – we hope to see you there! Also, we’ll be on-campus on Wednesday 11/5 for interviews! So, be sure to bring your resume to the tech talk. We’re looking for software generalists (both interns and new college grads!) to join our amazing team of engineers working on everything from operating systems to file systems, to the Java management stack, and the GUI. We are looking for the next generation of innovators to join us!

Nutanix Tech Talk

When? November 5th at 6pm

Where? UW – EE 125 – Paul G Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering

Who are we? Fastest growing infrastructure company! Nutanix is bringing the power of largest public cloud providers (Google, Facebook, Twitter) to enterprise data centers. Why should you come? We are looking to build out our engineering team with new grads, to bring in new ideas and ways of thinking. Also, Nutanix is opening up an office Seattle in just a few short months. Come to learn more about the future of data centers and how Nutanix is revolutionizing the market. Come join us to hear about our technology, see how we are revolutionizing infrastructure, and get some free food!!

NetApp Tech Talk

Thurs 11/6 at 6pm in EE125

Join NetApp, a Fortune 500 company known for their unsurpassed combination of culture and innovation, for a talk on Software Defined Storage, followed by a brief networking session. Food, giveaways, raffle prizes and insight will be provided!!!

Coffee (Keuring Machine) in ACM Lounge?

ACM is *considering* putting a Keurig coffee machine in the ACM lounge (no promises yet) to meet your caffeine needs. We would sell Keurig single-serve cups via Snack Overflow.

The purchase of a coffee machine is contingent on us finding enough volunteers who are willing to clean the machine (It needs to be cleaned once a week. Volunteers can rotate between weeks). If the machine gets disgusting it will be permanently removed.

Please fill out this quick survey so we can gauge interest in coffee:

Summary of CSE community discussion stimulated by the Hopper Conference

From Ed Lazowska:
To all members of the UW CSE community,On Monday October 13, CSE grad students, postdocs, faculty, and Grace Hopper Conference attendees had a 2+ hour conversation stimulated by the events that took place at the previous week’s Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing.

I’ve attached notes from that conversation.  Please take a few minutes to read them.

There is much more discussion to be had in order to ensure that CSE’s environment is as welcoming and inclusive as possible.  I’d like to suggest that this discussion is best carried out face-to-face rather than via email. We’ll have lots of opportunities.

GHC discussion V2

fyi, the lunch referred to in the notes is a pre-scheduled graduate student women’s lunch. We’ll have additional opportunities in the future for ugrads to continue the discussion, stay tuned.
