Virtual Reality is conceptually simple, and practically hard. This talk will introduce the basic pipeline of a VR device and highlight the differences between a VR application and a regular 3D one. While the structural differences are not dramatic, the tolerance to errors and fudges is so much lower with VR that real care needs to be taken with the low-level details. Unfortunately, many of the tools we use in error-sensitive software engineering tasks do not work that well in VR – not least because the most unpredictable part of the equation is the human visual system. This talk will look at ways we have had to adapt software development to the rapidly-evolving pace of technology, and what happens when it smacks up against a few million years of primate perception. Tom Forsyth is a senior architect at Oculus working in rendering technology.

Google Tech Talk
Google is coming to campus next week and we hope you’ll join us for a tech talk, “Testing Spanner” by Brian Vance!
Testing Spanner Spanner is Google’s scalable, multi-version, globally-distributed, and synchronously-replicated database. It replicates data across geographic regions for availability and locality of access, and shards the data across many servers for high throughput. Spanner is the first system to distribute data at global scale and support externally-consistent distributed transactions. Testing a system of this size and scale is no easy feat. This talk will give an overview of Spanner and discuss some of the methods Google uses to test this system.

Join us Thursday, February 19th to hear from Daniel Leventhal, Development Manager, as he shares how Tableau Software is changing the big data industry by democratizing data. Similar to how desktop publishing or the spreadsheet put powerful tools into the hands of the people who needed to use them, Tableau gives people the ability to visualize and analyze their own data. Learn how doctors, scientists, programmers, and even gamers are empowered to discover their data at the speed of thought. We are on a mission to fundamentally change the way people interact with their data. Daniel will provide a first-hand look into the software and share what we have in store to help us reach our mission.

DubHacks Spring 2015 is around the corner, and the organizing team is looking for both team leads and committee members. We learned a lot during the fall 2014 DubHacks, and we’re looking forward to bringing this season’s event to the next level. Come help us make it awesome.
Our structure is as follows:
– Finances/Sponsorships: Finalizing sponsorship deals, determining budgeting and expenditures
– Logistics: catering, event space, day-of schedule, mentorship, volunteers, swag, prizes, judges and speakers, mini-event planning, and a moonshot team
– Marketing & Design: Internal tools, website development, pre-event and on-site media relations, and content generation
