Explore study abroad options from Cape Town to Cairo from Copenhagen to Canberra at the Study Abroad Fair on Wednesday, October 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Mary Gates Hall Commons.  More than 100 exhibitors and program alums will be present to speak with you about options for taking your UW education across borders.  Staff from International Programs and Exchanges will also be available to answer any questions you may have about scholarships, travel resources, and finding the program that is the right match for you.

We are excited to welcome visitors from our exchange partner universities in Asia, Europe and Africa and hope that you will visit the fair to learn more about these unique and affordable study abroad opportunities.  More than 20 UW academic departments will also be present to showcase their UW faculty-led programs.

OCTOBER SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION SESSIONS

All information sessions will provide students with essential information needed to determine interest, eligibility and suitability for these competitive scholarship programs. Sessions will also contain information about the campus application processes for those scholarships requiring nomination.

Boren Scholarship & Fellowship Information Session:

Susan Sharp, from the Institute of International Education, will be speaking with interested students about the David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships. This is a rare opportunity to learn about these study abroad scholarships directly from a national program representative!

Boren Awards provide a unique funding opportunity for U.S. students to study world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are excluded.

The Boren Scholarship provides undergraduate students up to $20,000 for an academic year abroad. Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. The Boren Fellowship allows graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate studies.  Boren Fellows can be awarded up to $30,000.

Merage American Dream Fellowship Information Sessions:

The Merage American Dream Fellowship is dedicated to promoting expanded opportunities for immigrants to achieve their American Dream. Each year, the Foundation will choose a number of promising immigrant students in their graduating year of college to participate in the Merage Foundation Fellows Program. The selected Fellows will be immigrant students who reflect both a strong desire and a real capacity to achieve leadership roles in business, science, education, public service, culture, and the arts. Each Merage Foundation Fellow will receive a $10,000 stipend per year for two years. Fellows may spend the funds on the following kinds of activities: graduate education; strategic travel related to professional development; participation in specific skill building training programs; use of consultants to develop and carry out business or professional plans; personal or family support associated with internships, etc.

Carnegie Endowment Jr. Fellowship Information Sessions:

Each year the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace offers 8-10 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year. They are selected from a pool of nominees from close to 400 participating colleges. Carnegie Junior Fellows work as research assistants to the Endowment’s senior associates. Those who have begun graduate studies are not eligible for consideration. Positions are paid, full-time positions for one year. Junior fellows are currently paid a gross salary of $2,916.66 per month ($35,000 per year). A full benefits package is also provided.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Information Sessions:

The Goldwater Foundation awards undergraduate scholarships to outstanding students with demonstrated potential for and commitment to careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.  The one or two year scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Morris K. Udall Scholarship Information Session:

Campus deadline: Nov. 2, 2010

The Udall Scholarship awards undergraduate scholarships of up to $5000.  Selected students must have strong commitment to improving or preserving the environment; or a strong commitment to health care or tribal public policy and potential for significant future contribution in his or her chosen field.  The Foundation will award approximately 75 scholarships plus 50 honorable mentions.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship Information Sessions:

Campus deadline: Nov. 2, 2010

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship looks to support students currently actively engaged in leadership activities on campuses and/or in their communities. The Truman Scholarship awards students who are juniors or seniors with one year of undergraduate work left to complete beginning fall 2010.  The scholarship is awarded to students who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government or elsewhere in public service.

Critical Language Scholarship for Intensive Summer Institutes (CLS) Information Sessions:

National deadline: Nov. 15, 2010

CLS institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students. Students in all disciplines, including business, engineering, law, medicine, sciences, and humanities are encouraged to apply. Languages supported: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, Urdu.

Jumpstart Seattle at UW is accepting applications for the 2010-2011 Academic Year!!!

Jumpstart is an early literacy program that connects UW college students as tutors & mentors with 3-5 year old, low-income preschool children.  Read stories, sing songs and play games that support young children’s school readiness skills.  Undergraduates work 8-12 hours a week on a

Please share the scholarship information below with undergraduate students in all fields planning to study abroad this winter or spring quarter 2011 and who have financial need. 12 UW students were selected to receive this competitive national scholarship during the last application cycle!

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and is open to U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to all U.S. citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below:

* The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad.
* The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student’s accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
* The applicant is studying abroad for at least four weeks in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least four consecutive weeks.
* The applicant is studying abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the U.S. Department of State’s current Travel Warning list.

The current application cycle is for scholarships to support study abroad programs beginning between December 15, 2010 and April 15, 2011. This cycle encompasses spring semester, quarter, calendar year, winter inter-session and January term programs that are a minimum of four weeks in length. Applications for this cycle are due October 5, 2010.

The Luce Scholars Program is a fantastic opportunity open to graduating seniors, recent alums, graduate and professional students in all fields EXCEPT Asian Studies. It provides a year-long fully funded internship opportunity in a variety of Asian countries and is specifically geared toward those who have not spent significant time in Asia already (no language skills required). Graduating seniors, recent alums, graduate and professional students at UW are encouraged to apply for the Luce Scholars Program (http://www.hluce.org/lsprogram.aspx) for 2011-2012. The UW is able to nominate 3 students per year to compete for the opportunity to spend 12 months in Asia. The program provides stipends, language training and individualized professional placement in Asia for fifteen to eighteen young Americans each year.

Applicants must be American citizens who, by July 1 of the year they enter the program (2011), will have received at least a bachelor’s degree and will not have reached their 30th birthday. Applicants should have a record of high achievement, outstanding leadership ability, and a clearly defined career interest with evidence of potential for professional accomplishment. Those who already have significant experience in Asia or Asian studies are not eligible for the Luce Scholars Program. Additional details are provided in the Program Summary below.

Pacific Rim Summer School in Global Software Development and Computer Science

The University of Washington is a cooperating institution for this summer program and can select up to six participants for partial financial support.  Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply.

Program Highlights

• Participating students will earn six university credits.
• Intensive lab-based class in which students are organized into small global software teams; lecture-based classes on cross-cultural communication, international computer ethics, and topics in computer science. All instruction is in English.

• Faculty team from University of Oregon and guest lecturers from Peking University, CPATHi18n Pacific Rim universities, and industry partners Intel and Microsoft.

• Targeted to junior, senior, and first year graduate students from the U.S., China, Korea, and Japan (invited from the CPATHi18n Pacific Rim Partner Institutions). This year’s program is limited to 50 students, 25 from the Pacific Northwest, and 25 from Asia.
• Acceptance will be on a competitive basis.

Students must fulfill the following minimum criteria: Completion of Introduction to Software Engineering class (such as CSE 403/503) or equivalent. Work-related experience on a team software project may suffice. Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in computer science.  Students who graduate Spring 2010 are eligible.

Cost: The estimated cost of the program is $1600-$2000. Students selected to participate will receive an $800 grant from the University of Oregon to put toward travel and room expenses.

Important dates:

March 15:  Application and $50 fee due

April 1:  Notification of Acceptance

May 15:  $100 deposit and proof of visa, health insurance, and ticket purchase

June 15 (approx):  Orientation meeting at your university

July 17 and 30 (approx):  Fly on your own schedule to arrive at Peking University by July 18, depart July 30.

September 15:  Graduate student research paper due.

UW STUDENT EXCHANGES IN EUROPE (these are separate from the CSE exchanges to Switzerland, Sweden and Germany.)

Application Deadline Extended

The application deadline for UW Student Exchanges in Europe has been extended to FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12 (and MARCH 1 for exchanges in Scandinavia).  UW Exchanges provide students with access to a wide range of subjects and courses at UW partner universities around the world. Participants pay an exchange fee equal to regular UW tuition and no tuition to the host university; UW Financial Aid and scholarships apply. Students also receive regular UW credit for all coursework completed and can study at the partner university for one semester or an academic year. Instruction is often in the language of the host country, but many partner universities also offer courses designed for foreign students and/or courses taught in English.

Just a reminder that the CSE Study Abroad application for the KTH, ETH, and the new Saarland University exchanges is now online at: http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/exchanges.html.

Applications are due this Friday, February 12th at 5pm. Let me know if you have any questions.

If you’d like to study abroad at a different location or for a shorter period of time, you should check out the IP&E’s webpage of UW exchanges or look for a shorter summer Exploration Seminar (They’re fun! I’ve been to one in Israel and had a great experience).

Our KTH/ETH info meeting will run from 5-5:30p this evening  in room 303. If you’re interested in participating in these study abroad programs next year, or down the line, feel free to join us to learn more and to hear from students who have studied at these two schools.
