Here is what one CSS student – who is already accepted in the program – wrote in his application:

“The Institute of Technology does not offer many study abroad programs. As a Computer Science major in the Institute of Technology, the Italy:Technology & Society will allow me the opportunity to explore the international job market in the field of technology. Studying abroad will open more possibilities for me to gain employment after I graduate. This program will give me an outside perspective of technology and help me understand how valuable this field is from a global perspective by exploring the technological relationship between the United States and other countries.”

I think his argument is both valid and sound, regardless of how you arrange the premises and the conclusion. If you agree, please share it with your students.

On behalf of Bridge Education Abroad Institute (BEAI), I am writing to you today to inform you about our summer program in Ireland. Our institute plans short programs all across the world, to provide students with unique opportunities to experience different political cultures while strengthening their leadership and diplomacy skills. Our programs draw a diverse group of students together from all over the world to discuss pressing global issues while exchange cultural values. In a rapidly globalizing world, we believe these experiences are invaluable to the success of students in the global job market.

For the summer of 2014, we have one program scheduled in Dublin, Ireland during the dates August 6th – August 16^th, 2014. This program will include lectures from experienced professors and guest speakers from all over the globe, including the United States of America. A few of our professors include:

The students will enrich their knowledge of Ireland’s history, international politics, and economics while also enjoying travel to famous and historic places. We also encourage students to get to know one another and share cultural values through planned social events.

·         City of Limerick

·         Cliffs of Moher (Ireland’s most popular attraction) and more

Even with the summer close at hand, there are still plenty of students still figuring out their plans for the upcoming break. An invitation to participate in the Engineering Jordan study abroad exploration seminar 2014, from Professor Heidi Gough…

Interested in Study Abroad? Interested in water and the environment in an International context? The CEE department is offering the study abroad course, “CEE 497 / CEE 598: ENGINEERING JORDAN, WATER IN AN ARID LAND” in late August/Early September.

Students learn about the cycle of water engineering from water resource to wastewater reuse in the backdrop of one of the most water-poor nations in the world, The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Students in the course live and study side-by-side with students from the Jordan University of Science and Engineering. This will be the third year in which this class has been offered and it has been getting rave reviews from past students. Space is limited.  Applications to enroll must be submitted by March 1.

This is a unique opportunity and is one of only a few engineering study abroad opportunities sponsored by the College of Engineering.

AIT also offers summer internships at major Hungarian software companies including LogMeIn and Prezi.

AIT also offers a one-month summer session from late May to late June.  You can combine that with the spring term to take additional courses (mobile software development and/or a course on the history of Budapest) – making the AIT spring + summer term equivalent to two academic quarters of credit.  You can also apply to just the AIT summer program.

While many AIT students are CS majors, the program welcomes all students with an interest and background in computation.  For example, students contemplating their own tech startup or with interests in application areas such as computational biology are likely to find the program compelling and rewarding.  CS majors will find that AIT offers a number of courses that are required for their major (e.g., theory of computation, algorithms, and others), making it possible to take both traditional major courses while also taking other courses that are unique to AIT.

The AIT program has a first-rate faculty including professors such as Erno Rubik (inventor of the Rubik’s Cube and recent recipient of the U.S. Outstanding Contributions to Science Education Award) teaching an extraordinary collection of courses, many of which are not available at most colleges or universities.

All classes are conducted in English on AIT’s lovely campus on the banks of the Danube River.  Students live in vibrant neighborhoods of Budapest and have ample opportunities to interact with Hungarian students and explore Hungary and the region.

AIT is small and friendly, with typical class sizes of 5-15 students.  Here are the schools from which students have come to AIT:  Amherst, Arizona State, Brown, Carleton, Cornell, Dartmouth, Grinnell, Gustavus Adolphus, Hampshire, Harvard, Harvey Mudd, Knox, Lewis and Clark, Macalaster, Mt. Holyoke, Oberlin, Olin, Pomona, Princeton, RPI, Rhodes, Rochester, Skidmore, Smith, St. Olaf, Swarthmore, Vassar, Williams, U. of Puget Sound, U. of Washington, Wesleyan, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Yale.

The program also includes Hungarian students from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

Applications for Spring 2014 are due November 1, applications for the summer term are due March 1, and applications for Fall 2014 are due April 1.

I’m writing to provide information about the GO! and Fritz Scholarships for study abroad.  Please share this information with students and colleagues!  If your program has a Facebook page, please also like us at http://www.facebook.com/UWGlobalOpportunities.

The GO! and Fritz Scholarships are open to UW undergraduates from all three campuses and offer awards of $2000 – $5000 to support study abroad. 

• The applications are online at goglobal.uw.edu.
• To apply for the GO!, students must be residents of WA state and eligible for Pell Grants or Husky Promise.
• To apply for the Fritz, students must be declared social science or humanities majors with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

The deadline for applications for the GO! and Fritz is April 25^th at 5pm.

• Students studying abroad during summer, early fall, or fall 2013 should apply now.
• Students studying abroad in winter or spring 2014 should apply at our next deadline in November.

We’re offering information sessions, drop-in advising, and individual appointments to answer student questions and provide application feedback.

• Info sessions are Friday, 3/29 from 12:30 – 1:30pm and Tuesday, April 16^th from 3:30 – 4:30pm in MGH171.
• Drop-in hours are Mondays 10am – 12pm and Thursdays 3:30 – 5pm in MGH171.
• Students are welcome to email goglobal@uw.edu to ask questions or set up an advising appointment.

We invite all students interested in study abroad (and advisers too!) to our next Study Abroad Meet & Greet on Tuesday, 4/16 from 4:30 – 5:30pm in MGH171.
