Coke Closet Opens

Hello (CSE) World,

Early this afternoon officially marks the grand opening of the UW ACM Coke Closet!!! Yes you heard that right! Located in our very own undergraduate lounge in the basement of CSE lies a delicious amount snacks, soda, and frozen mini-meals.  Of course, (like all great things in life), these items come at a slight cost, but on average half that of most on campus vendors! Yes, that is right! Affordable and Convenient items right in our basement in these hard times of HUB closure.

In order to provide this department defining service, as a patron of the coke closet thy must adhere to the following commandments:

1.) Thou shall not steal!

Prices are clearly labeled by the item, no student discounts, don’t guess! We are serious.  We keep very very careful records. If we lose money everyone loses the beloved coke closet.  Don’t try, you never know who will be lurking around at 4:00am…  The consequences will not be light…

2.) Thou shall not carry negative tabs!

Tabs are still in! That is right, you don’t need exact change to make purchases, but there are definitely no IOUs.  We recommend buying over time off of $5 dollar tab deposits.  We have temporary tab sheets until we get in new ones next week.  Please put your Name and CSE ID at the top of a tab sheet and transfer to the new tab sheets when they come in.

3.) Thou shall cherish the Coke Closet!

Yes, it’s there, cheap stuff, and all profits go strait back to you threw awesome ACM events and free stuff.

A small order exists now, but more will come soon.  Muffins will be in next order.  Right now enjoy frozen chimichangas, candy bars, crackers, fruit snacks, of course soda, and much much more.  (also saw some Mexican Cane Soda, thats right, a glass bottle, the best $1 i have ever spent!)

Please email absolutely any questions to myself, acm-officers@cs, or find an ACM officer.

Enjoy!

Welcome Back — ACM Events and News

Good Morning!

On behalf of the Association of Computing Machinery welcome back!!!  We hope you guys are pumped for the new academic year and had awesome productive summers of study, research, internships and travel.  If you are new to the department the ACM is a department run organization responsible for organizing awesome social, academic, and career development events to benefit you, the CS or CSE student.

Events

Here is a summary of approaching events!

Tech Talks — These are information and recruiting sessions put on by companies (always free food and prizes).  Fall quarter is loaded! Imagine Cup, Tableau, Microsoft, and Google are coming up in the next two weeks! Check out http://www.cs.washington.edu/affiliates/studentoutreach.html for the detailed schedule.

Welcome Event for New Majors — Monday October 4th.  A call for mentors will go out soon.  We hope all new students can make it!

Smoothie Day — will make its return on October 15th, stay tuned!

Career Fair — is huge!!! Every company will be there. Thursday October 28, 9am – 3pm in Atrium.

Fall Fest — largest social event of quarter will be in late october early November.

002 and 006 Rearrangent

You will notice some significant changes to layout of the two popular undergraduate labs.  Don’t be alarmed, the department implemented the new design based on lab usage statistics (most noteworthy change, the addition of mobile work stations). We know change (even small) can be difficult, but we encourage you to give the new arrangements a try and we will seek out comments and feedback later in the quarter.

Coke Closet

The beloved coke closet will make its return within the first few weeks of the quarter! Stay tuned and don’t steal!!!

ACM Website

Expect some significant changes in the next few weeks to update the usability and relevance of the ACM website http://flatline.cs.washington.edu/orgs/acm/ .  We hope to make the website a more central source of information for ACM events.

CSE T-shirts

You will see cat and man shirts being displayed around the department.  We will be selling these and older versions at the ACM welcome event or you can contact an ACM officer with details.

Enjoy the first day of classes!

Mikhail Manyak Memorial Bench Fundraiser

Hi all,

Misha was a CSE major who passed away two years ago from complications during dental surgery. His friends and family are putting on a fundraiser to have a bench at UW to honor his memory. Details below.

Dance in Mikhail’s Memory

What: A fund raising salsa dance to install a memorial bench for Mikhail/Misha/Michael Manyak. There will be a lesson for beginners from 6:00 – 6:45, dancing until 9:00 with performances by Johnny Bravo Dancers, and Salsa Con Todo at 8:00.

Who: Misha’s friends, family, fans, fellow dancers, etc. This event is open to the public, attendees need not have a personal connection with Misha.

When: Sunday, August 8 6pm – 9pm

Where: HaLo located at 500 E Pike St

Why: Two years ago we lost a dear friend and we want to establish a place on or near the University of Washington campus where he will be remembered forever.

How: The minimum cover will be $6 (the usual at HaLo), with a recommended donation of $25 for individuals and $40 for couples. Our goal is $5400 to cover the cost of the event and the bench on the University of Washington campus, and this is our main fund raising event. Anything you can donate helps!

Any questions about the event or donations for the bench can be made to Eugenia Prezhdo and Leah Fury, friends of Misha: eprezhdo@u.washington.edu and lpfury@u.washington.edu.

Come play softball in the summer!

Come play softball in the summer!

I sent this out two weeks ago and already have some great responses. So far we have 7 guys and 5 girls, and we definitely need more as not everyone can make it to every game and summer has many temptations. Thanks to everyone who’s already joined the team and if you have just finished your last final exam/project today, perhaps you would want to consider spending 2 hours a week playing softball with us? 🙂

The registration is due June 23th and game starts on week of June 28th. I’ll probably go register next week, but you can join on the team any time before the 2nd game (week of July 5th I believe). And even though it’s a league and there’s competition, all that is required to join the team is the urge to hit a ball and run.

Send me an email if you’re interested or have questions. Happy summer everyone!

It’s almost summer and the ima softball league is going to be lots of fun! The info is already out:

Game starts June 28. I’m organizing the co-rec team, so the game times are either Mon, Tue, or Thu with two available times, 5:15PM or 6:30PM. We need as many girls and guys as we can and I assure you it’ll be worth playing. The weather is going to be great, you’ll get to hit, run, shout, scream, jump, roll, flip, maybe fly, and most importantly, you don’t have to do research for at least 2 hours a week 🙂

If you can’t make the game times but still want to play, we’ll be planning batting cages and field practice on weekends. Just let me know if you’re interested.

Critical Vulnerability in Some Adobe Products

Critical vulnerabilities have been publicized, and are being exploited,

in these widely-used Adobe products: Flash Player, Adobe Reader, and

Acrobat. The impact of these vulnerabilities could be severe: should you

visit a dodgy website, or open a malevolent PDF file, attackers could

gain control of your system.

For Flash Player, a patch is due from Adobe in a couple of days (please

apply it when alerted); for Reader and Acrobat, in three weeks. The lab

has taken (or will shortly take) action to protect systems we manage. On

systems you manage, you may choose to simply excercise extra caution, or

you may choose to take mitigating action.

Details, including how to mitigate, are here:
