a letter of serious concern about radiation exposure from the
full-body scanners in airports written last april by several UCSF
medical faculty.  I had not heard of a lot of these issues before
seeing this letter and thought others might be interested.

Week 9?!: General Meeting, Student Fridge, Random Info Session

Hello All,

Quite a bit of the quarter has gone by without many notices, here are a few things to keep in mind!

1.) ACM Quarterly General Meeting: Friday December 3rd, 11:30pm-12:20pm, CSE 303

The ACM holds one of these meetings every quarter.  We provide pizza (w00t!), you tell us how we are doing and hopefully raise interesting discussion. This is your chance to tell us suggestions, praise (or complain) about the coke closet, and talk about any other odities in the department.

2.) Cleaning out THE Fridge

Veterans can affirm the student fridge in the ACM lounge has seen better days…  The old cleaning schedule will now take effect!  The student fridge will be COMPLETELY cleaned out sometime in the evening the first Sunday of each month.  EVERYTHING WILL BE THROWN AWAY, absolutely everything, no mercy, ie if you want anything don’t leave it in the fridge that day until the next cleaning notice has been posted on the fridge.  The first cleaning will be THIS SUNDAY 12/5, Moreover, please remember to

  • Be curteous when using the small student fridge.  It is intended for temporary storage, 1-2 days maximum, not to load with food for the next week.
  • DO NOT USE THE COKE CLOSET FRIDGE FOR PERSONAL ITEMS.  There are left overs from tech talks stored in the door but that is about it aside from inventory.
  • If using the coke closet freezer is absolutely necessary (due to student freezer size), please mark your name on it and mark NOT INVENTORY.

3.) REDFIN CEO and Infosession, Thursday December 2nd, Mary Gates 134, 5:30-7:30pm

This is not an ACM event, but the CEO of the company will be present.  You can RSVP and find out  more information about this session and other sessions through www.huskyjobs.washington.edu/students/.  I wont necessarily be posting them all, its just another source.

4.) @uw_acm: Start following us on Twitter!

We’re hoping to put more comical updates in real time on here.  Like when a coke closet order has just came in, current state of the tech talk, and other random things! It only works if we have followers! So follow us!

Enjoy the final strech!

attempted break in last weekend

From: Tracy Erbeck <tracy@cs.washington.edu>
Date: Fri, Nov 5, 2010 at 4:29 PM
Subject: [cs-ugrads] attempted break in

Last weekend it appears there was an attempted break in to several offices in the building.   Fortunately, it doesn’t appear that the thieves actually gained access to any of the rooms, and damage was minimal.   Although we have a security guard most nights,  he can’t be everywhere at once, nor be here 24 hours a day.

We really need all of you to help keep our building secure, certainly so after building hours and on the weekends when there are less of us around.  When you enter the building via keycard, check to make sure nobody has “piggy backed” and followed you in.   If somebody tries, likely they belong here too, but it would be optimal if you could ask them who they are and if they are a part of CSE.  If they are, great, you’ve made a new CSE friend.  If they aren’t, likely they will turn and walk the other way.  If they continue into the building without responding, please call UWPD- 911 from any campus phone.   If you call from your cell phone, you’ll need to tell the dispatcher you are on UW campus and you need to be transferred to UWPD.   ***The police would rather have us call and have the possibility of a mistake, then to have a call because of a break in.

When you leave your office, make certain that you close and lock the door (unless, of course, your officemates are there).

You should never leave your laptop on your desk, unless locked.  Same for cell phones or other portable electronics.  These are precisely things that thieves are looking for…something they can quickly and easily slide into a backpack, or stuff into a pocket.   The goods can be stored in peds, filing cabinets, etc.

With the HUB closure, our building is experiencing a high rate of new traffic.  There are lots of people wandering through that we don’t know.  It’s an adjustment that we need to accept,  and we’ll all need to keep up good security practices.

And lastly, please don’t ever put yourself in a situation where you are uncomfortable, or where you could be harmed.  We don’t need supermans… just good samaritans.

If you have any security of safety concerns, I’d be more than happy to discuss.

Note that this is much easier if you enter from the EE side of the
atrium, where you can just shut the door behind you.  There’s really
no socially ept to get around piggybacking if you enter (or leave!)
through the sliding doors facing Stevens Way.

Preparing for Industry: Course Advice from Faculty

Hey CSE Students!

To help plan your courses, CSE faculty complied a page of ‘course advice’ for specialized career paths (this is the page that was was mentioned during the pizza lunch with the chair). Linked here, this information was created by faculty and posted by the advisors, with the intention of providing you all with a better understanding of what courses will help prepare you for specific areas/fields in computer science and beyond.

As this is a new effort, please send your feedback (especially positive feedback!) about the helpfulness of this page to ugrad-advisor@cs.

Working late in the labs? Don’t walk across campus alone! Husky NightWalk offers full-time uniformed security guards to assist students, staff, and faculty members to various locations on campus and within a one-mile radius off campus. Just call to request someone to walk with you to your dorm, apartment, or anywhere else near campus!
