Something Ventured (a documentary on the early days of Silicon Valley
and the beginnings of the modern start-up approach) is showing at the
Seattle International Film Festival on May 30th.  I haven’t seen the
movie so I can’t vouch for it, but I will be attending on 5/30
(Memorial Day) at 6:30p at the Harvard Exit (it has a couple of other
showings as well).  I thought others might want to know about it and
if we meet there can go grab something afterwards.

Subject: building fans on 5/10- tuesday

One of our two building fans will be off tomorrow morning from 6am to 10am.  Most of you won’t notice anything different, but there will be a few spots in the building that are noisier than usual(the single fan running will be running at high speed).   Everything should be back to normal by noon.

CSE T-Shirt Design Contest Results and Preorder

Hey CSE people,

The submissions are in!!! Thank you designers for your awesome, clever designs!  Please fill out this T-Shirt Preorder form ASAP

https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/stever4/132445

by at the absolute latest, 11:59pm, Wednesday, May 4th! We need enough time to get the T-Shirts ordered by the BBQ so we can introduce the T-Shirts in a high profile environment (and sell the extras!).  Please only indicate T-Shirts you would intend to buy if the shirt got printed! Not all T-Shirts are guaranteed to print (we will likely drop the bottom 1-4 shirts  if interest is not high enough to justify printing), but we will contact you if yours doesn’t make the cut and solicit a final shirt tally.  T-Shirts may change slightly for better printing, but they will be more or less unchanged in concept.  Payment will be due before picking up the shirt, the cost will be no more than 15$ a shirt, we will contact Preordering people individually about those details.

Do fill out this survey! Do it now!

Ugrad CSE T-Shirt Design Contest!

Hey Ugrads,

Now that tech talks are winding down you’re not hearing, as much from us….

But, we have an opportunity for you!  Have you ever noticed geeky-tech-fabulous in house T-Shirts older CSE majors wear around on occasion? Ever thought of an epic T-Shirt idea you want to show the (cse)  world!  Then now is your chance! We want YOU to create the most clever hilarious 1337 (elite) shirts you can think of.  Your creation could join the ranks of the CSE classics such as the One Root Ugrad Tree, Cat, or “MAN Shirt”.  We want these designs no later than Tuesday, April 26th by 11:59pm. Designs can be submitted to this catalyst dropbox

https://catalyst.uw.edu/collectit/assignment/stever4/15452/58535

Here is the fine print:

  • The designs must be scalable, ie, a PDF or PSD, not compressed separated by color
  • We will not accept any design with more than 2 simple colors (ie Black, White, Blue, Green, Red, etc…)
  • We strongly encourage 1 color designs (to keep costs down for not very large orders)
  • Your design can have a front and back component.
  • You may choose the T-Shirt color (within reason, please try to keep it to basic colors)
  • We will try to get American Apparel shirts since that is what people mostly prefer!
  • We have the right to modify your design slightly to make it printable, we will tell you if we need to do this.

And the selection process

  • We will have both girl and guy styles and sizes of shirts, make sure the design is generally accepted!
  • We will consider all T-Shirt designs for printing
  • We will then send an electronic preorder form (this will act as a design vote)
  • If your design get’s a reasonable number of preorders, and the orders/cost ratio works out, it will be printed and sold. Surplus shirts will likely be purchased for future sales depending on number of preorders and awesomeness of the shirt
  • We hope to have shirts in and distributed at the CSE BBQ on May 20th, but we can’t guarantee anything!

Remember the best designs are simple, clever, humorous, and make us proud to be CSE Majors!

Looking forward to awesome T-Shirt designs!!!!

Berico Tech Talk, “Greening-up-the-Labs”, and reminders

Hey all,

A few random things…

0.) Berico Tech Talk

When: Wednesday April 13th (Tomorrow), 6:00pm-7:30pm

Where: CSE Atrium

What: Is SQL Dead? Please join Berico Technologies Senior Engineer Soup Shah as he explores the use of traditional Relational Databases vs. the new NoSQL/Cloud database approach. Discussions will take a high level approach before diving into the internals of the question and examining when is an appropriate time to use each one of the two paradigms. Following discussion of the main topic, Soup will answer any questions regarding cloud computing as well as its application in the national security arena. Food and beverages will be provided by Berico Technologies.  www.bericotechnologies.com   Presented by Sapan “Soup” Shah.

This company is from the East Coast, in D.C.,  (which is pretty rare for a tech talk here, 5 hour flights aren’t fun!) so it might be interesting to drop by.

1.) UW Spring Career Fair

When: Thursday April 14th, 3pm-7pm

Where: Alaska Airlines (no longer Bank of America) Arena

What: It’s UW’s largest career fair. But there are a fair number of tech companies that will be present eager to higher Software Engineers (aka us!).  If you are still looking for a job or internship do stop by! See the list for yourself, http://www.scribd.com/doc/52508971/2011-SCF-Employer-Guide.

2.) Greening-up-the-Labs

We are very fortunate for our printing privilegedes!  Now here is a way to automatically end those pesky cover sheets from printing from linux machines.  Run the following script in linux:

#!/bin/bash
# Sets the ugrad lab printers to print double-sided  without header pages
# Author: Krysta Yousoufian, 10/11/10

# Print double-sided in 002, 003, 006, and 022
lpoptions -p ps002 -o Duplex=DuplexNoTumble
lpoptions -p ps003 -o Duplex=DuplexNoTumble
lpoptions -p ps006 -o Duplex=DuplexNoTumble
lpoptions -p ps022 -o Duplex=DuplexNoTumble

# Turn off header pages in 002, 003, 006, and 022
lpoptions -p ps002 -o job-sheets=none
lpoptions -p ps003 -o job-sheets=none
lpoptions -p ps006 -o job-sheets=none
lpoptions -p ps022 -o job-sheets=none

Once again thank Krysta Yousoufian for that tip! (Sorry for the delay… and we are still not sure how to do it automatically for windows!)

3.) Vote!

ACM elections are still going! Please vote!

Event Coordinators: https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/jtmasaki/130683 (remember to vote for 2)
External Relations: https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/jtmasaki/130685

Please vote by 11:59pm Tuesday April 12th (aka TODAY).

Enjoy the sunshine!
