Intermediate Technical Interview Coaching Event Oct. 18

CSE undergraduates (only!) who already have some technical interview experience can now sign up at https://goo.gl/forms/rZKkcIftlfTblH2Y2 for the Intermediate Technical Interview Coaching event to be held in the Atrium next Wednesday, October 18.

At this event, technical interviewers from several of our industry affiliates will meet with groups of 2-4 students at a time. The interviewers will describe their technical interview processes, give you a few sample questions and coach you on what they look for in answers. The sessions will include sample programming questions, logic questions and puzzles. Our experts will also provide examples of what they ask in actual technical interviews and how to successfully answer to land the job. Students will be able to meet with interviewers from multiple companies in several short sessions which will total one hour in length. Sessions will start at 3 pm and 4 pm, so students should choose just one of those two times on the sign up link.

Space is limited, so students should sign up as soon as possible this week.

Again, this event is especially geared toward CSE students who already have some technical interview experience. The goal is to give you a good idea of what you will face in a technical interview and what kind of preparation is necessary to do well in one.  If you are new to technical interviews, we will offer a separate session on October 31st (RSVP to come later).

Fall quarter is just around the corner and we need CSE Mentors!

Welcome back folks, it’s almost time to kick off the new year!

To do that effectively, we need veteran CSE majors (you have completed at least one quarter in the major) to mentor our new students, and we have a LOT of new majors.  Just over 300 to put things in perspective.  Ideally we’d have at least 75 mentors.  Even with 75, that means everyone will have a small group of mentees, 4-5 each.

Welcome night will be Wednesday, Sept. 27th from 430-600 or 630 approximately.  If you can help us out, please fill out the survey to volunteer

There will be burritos for those who participate, but the REAL reason to volunteer, is to help all of our new majors learn how welcoming and inclusive this community of undergraduates are here in UW CSE.

We look forward to seeing you all back at UW in one week!

Present your posters at the 2017 CSE Spring Poster Session!

Hello CSE undergrads!

We are excited to announce our first-ever Paul G. Allen School Spring Poster Session! All students who have participated in any capstone or project courses this year are encouraged to apply to present their posters.

The Event

The 2017 Allen School undergraduate poster session will be held on Thursday, June 8th, from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Atrium. The poster session is open to all BS and BS/MS students who participated in a capstone course (such as 475 and 481) or project course (such as 440 and 446) during the 2016-17 academic year.

This will be a more formal event, with high profile CSE alumni and friends coming to view your work. Attendance will be by invitation only. Presenting students are welcome to bring family members, as it will be the day before our CSE commencement ceremony.

Because space is limited, there is a short application process. Student posters will be selected based on various factors including the quality of the abstract in the application, the likely interests of the Allen School alumni/friends visiting, and our goal to present a wide range of ‘cool’ projects from multiple courses.

Why participate?

  1. There will be a prize! A panel of judges in attendance will vote on the 2017 Project of the Year. Presenters of the winning poster, in addition to all the kudos associated with being the first-ever awardees, will receive $1,000 to split among the group.
  1. You can have another chance to show off that project you have worked so hard on. Presenters will get to meet and talk about their projects to smart, talented friends of CSE.

The Details

  • At least one member of the team must be at the poster session to represent the poster.
  • At least one member of the team who will be present at the event must be enrolled as a CS, CE, or CSEM student.
  • Fall 2016, Winter 2017, and Spring 2017 capstone and poster project courses are all eligible to participate.

Application Process

Fill out this short form: https://goo.gl/forms/9aMhTLGdqPQp5HYB2

Applications are due by end of day on May 7th

Presenters will be notified by May 12th.

Reminder! Data-Driven Health & Wellness Strategies: this Wed April 26, 3:30-4:30, CSE 691

We’ll examine the research from the source rather than the oversimplified media articles to see how much health and wellness can really impact mental function. We’ll also discuss practical ways to incorporate wellness into your busy schedule so you get the most bang for your buck.

And in two weeks: Professional Communication Tips: Wed May 10, 2:30-3:30, CSE 691

  • Write and speak like a legit adult! Present your ideas with authority, avoid awkward misunderstandings, and understand nuances of professional communication.

More workshops for CSE majors! Social responsibility, health, and professional communication

Hello, CSE students! I hope lots of you were able to attend yesterday’s financial management talk. We will offer three more workshops on general life skills this quarter:

  • Social Responsibility for Tech Professionals – Wed April 19, 4:30-5:30, CSE 691
    • This discussion is intended to help you consider your goals and values, and identify ways to act on them after graduating — selecting a company or job that reflects your values, volunteer and service opportunities, and utilizing benefits provided by your employer.
  • Health & Wellness Strategies – Wed April 26, 3:30-4:30, CSE 691
    • Coding should not be your entire life, and SnackOverflow should not be your only source of food. This workshop will present strategies for being a well-rounded and reasonably healthy human: balancing your exciting new tech job (or current CSE schedule) with eating, sleeping, exercising, and doing fun non-work stuff.
  • Professional Communication Tips – Wed May 10, 2:30-3:30, CSE 691
    • Write and speak like a legit adult! Present your ideas with authority, avoid awkward misunderstandings, and understand nuances of professional communication.
