Tour Guides Needed This Friday!

Hi everyone,

This Friday, April 17th, we’re hosting a visit for the students we’ve admitted into the department through Direct Admission for this upcoming year. From 4-5:30pm, we’ll break the visitors into smaller groups and have them rotate through two demos and building tours in about half hour increments. The graphics and HCI labs are the demos, and we’re in need of ugrad students to lead the tours of the Allen Center. That means you!

We’re expecting about 75 people total (students and parents), and we’d like to have a lot of guides to make the tour groups even smaller and more personal during each of the rotations. If you’re interested in leading or co-leading tours from 4-5:30pm on Friday, please send me a quick email to sign up. I’ll provide the guides with more details and instructions before the event.

Anyone who helps out is also invited to join us for the reception at 5:30 in the Atrium.

Thanks!

Megan

Volunteers needed to help with May outreach to younger students!

Hey CSE majors! We have a number of K-12 student groups visiting during May, and would love your assistance in showcasing the wonders of CSE. Perhaps you have a fabulous research or Capstone project you can demo? Please look through the following activities and email your advisers about which you’re available to help with.  🙂

Northshore Middle-School Women in Science, Math, Engineering
May 1, 10am – noon
What we need: One half-hour activity, repeated three times for groups of 20 students. A research demo, fabulous presentation would be great!
* We also need a thirty-minute activity that could happen just once, from 10-10:30. If you  don’t have a demo or activity but want to help, you could give a brief tour for this.

TEC Access Middle School (a STEM-focused school)
May 7
What: A 30-minute to 1-hour activity presented twice, preferably something related to robotics.

Evergreen High School
When: May 20th, Sometime between 9-1
What: One 30-45 minute demo for group of 15-20 high school students (upperclassmen)

Thoreau Elementary School
When May 28th 8-9AM (yes, it’s early)
What: Two one-hour or 30-minute activities, presented twice, for 6th-graders (preferably something interactive).

If you don’t have any specific ideas but still want to help, email and we may be able to use you! Feel free to volunteer with friends to present something together, or suggest these opportunities to your grad student and faculty research advisers.

Start-up Office Hours event on April 23

A reminder about our up-coming Startup Office Hours event. Please take advantage of this great opportunity!

—–Original Message—–
From: Ed Lazowska
Subject: “Startup Office Hours”

For several years, we’ve had a very successful program where our friends at Madrona Venture Group and the Perkins-Coie law firm hold “startup office hours” once a quarter in the Atrium.

The basic approach is that a partner from each firm comes to CSE for a few hours; they hang out in the Atrium; students or faculty members interested in “learning more” — particularly anyone beginning to think about a startup — book a slot and have a discussion with the venture/legal pair.

Other firms are now seeking to participate, and I’m happy to announce:

STARTUP OFFICE HOURS
OVP VENTURE PARTNERS AND WILSON SONSINI GOODRICH & ROSATI THURSDAY APRIL 23, 10:00-2:00

Register for a slot here:
http://www.doodle.com/4vmgnay2gtquai6v

Find out more about OVP here:
http://www.ovp.com/ Lucinda Stewart is the partner who will be with us on the 23rd.

Find out more about WSGR here:
http://www.wsgr.com/WSGR/Index.aspx Craig Sherman is the partner who will be with us on the 23rd.

Both Lucinda and Craig are terrific; this is a great chance to benefit from their many years of experience in the financial and legal aspects of startups.

SWE Region J Conference on Entrepreneurship

Inventing Your Own Path

In 2009, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is taking the path less traveled!  From April 17-19th, the Professional Northwest and UW SWE sections are hosting the 2009 SWE Region J Conference at the UW South Campus Center.  The theme of the conference is “Entrepreneurship: Inventing Your Own Path.”

This conference will be an exciting and informative weekend that will help scientists, engineers, and anyone else turn their ideas into companies through workshops, speakers, and an entrepreneurial services fair.  Workshop leaders include Vanessa Fox, a partner at Seattle’s Ignition Partners venture firm, and Sharelle Klaus, founder of Dry Soda.

There will also be a technical tour at Boeing and a career fair featuring engineering companies that may not generally recruit at UW.

The lunch keynote speaker is Linda Bernardi, a serial tech entrepreneur who recently started her own leadership institute.  Ms. Bernardi is the CEO and founder of StraTerra Partners, a technology strategy consulting firm, and a board member of SETI.

Christina Lomasney, CEO, president, and co-founder of materials science firm Modumetal, will be the keynote speaker at the evening banquet.  She has worked in the research, development and commercialization of advanced materials technologies for over a decade.

The conference includes an Order of the Engineer ceremony where engineers take an oath similar to the Hippocratic Oath sworn by doctors.

The 2009 SWE Region J conference is a great opportunity to network with women engineers.  The conference is open to males and females, engineers and non-engineers.  Early-bird registration ends March 23 and banquet tickets are limited, so register soon to save your spot at this inspiring event!

For more information, please visit:  http://www.swe.org/regionj/jcon09/

Sponsors include BP, US Navy Recruiting Command, and UW Technology Management MBA.
