A reminder that all CSE undergrads (only) are strongly encouraged to attend our Resume Workshop next Tuesday, October 12 from 3:00-6:00 pm in the Allen Center Atrium.
This year’s outstanding panel of reviewers includes representatives from Amazon, Facebook, Google, Isilon, Microsoft, and whitepages. In many cases the reviewers will be the very HR folks and engineers who will be making the hiring decisions for internships and full-time positions–so it’s a chance go beyond the resume guides and get solid info directly from the source!
No rsvp is needed. Students can arrive anytime between 3:00 and 5:30. Bring along 4 or 5 resume copies if at all possible. A rough draft will also work. At minimum, bring a bulleted list of accomplishments to share with the individual reviewers so they can guide you toward a first draft.
Please contact Dave Rispoli at rispoli@cs.washington.edu for any additional details.
Hey all you CSE people,
Another tech talk today, its gonna rock! Free food, tshirts, more swag, and of course Internships and Jobs!!!
Tableau, TODAY, 5:30pm – 7:00pm, EEB 105

We strongly urge all CSE undergrads who might be looking for employment after earning their degree (are we leaving anyone out?) to attend our CSE Autumn Career Events.
Not only do these four events feature vital employment information for all future CSE job seekers, but most will be presented by the high-tech hiring managers who eventually will be making the decisions on your applications!
Event 1: Employer Panel
Date/Time: Wednesday, October 6, 2010 5:30-6:30pm
Place: EE125
Our first career event of autumn will provide an overview of the job search process from both the CSE student and employer perspective. No reservations are necessary, but do come prepared with you questions! Our outstanding panelists include:
Tam Armstrong, CSE alum, Animation Engineer for Bungie (where they just shipped Halo: Reach). Tam knows high-tech employment from all sides and will give you the inside scoop on how to go from the CSE classroom to your dream job.
Brian Ma, CSE alum and grizzled veteran of Seattle-area startups—Co-founder of PriceYeti.com, a cool new startup. Brian will let you in on how you can use smaller companies to build your career and/or retire early.
Joni Kimzey, hiring manager for Tableau Software, one of the nation’s 500 fastest growing tech companies will give you vital guidance from the high-tech employer perspective.
A Microsoft Representative (To be Determined). We can’t leave out these guys! Each year we try to include a CSE alum who is in a key position with our largest local high-tech employer.
Dawn Wiggin, UW College of Engineering Co-op Office. Internships can be an important step on the path to full time employment. Dawn will provide some key advice on how internships might fit for you.
The panel is meant to be general — while the company representatives may provide some level of self-promotion, their focus will be on providing a peek inside the recruiting process so our students will know how to best prepare. In other words you should attend even if you are not considering employment at the specific companies represented. You should also attend this event even if you won’t be considering full time employment in the next year or more. Early planning is the best way to get from A to B!
Our moderator will be Dave Rispoli rispoli@cs.washington.edu , the PMP adviser. Dave is also assisting with our other ugrad career events. He’s the best point of contact for any questions about these events.
The additional Autumn Career Events:
Event: Resume Review Roundtable Workshop
Date/Time: Tuesday, October 12; 3:00-6:00 pm
Place: CSE Atrium
In this workshop, HR reps, recruiters and engineers sit with small groups of CSE students to critique resumes, offer suggestions, and help refine the way you present yourself on paper.
Event: Technical Interview Coaching
Date/Time: Monday, October 18; 3:30-5:30 pm
Place: CSE Atrium
This workshop helps CSE juniors and seniors prepare for technical interviews.
Event: Mock Technical Interviews
Date/Time: Monday, November 1; 6:00-8:15 pm
Place: Career Center
CSE students participate in a one-on-one simulated interview with local high-tech software developers and engineers.
Good Morning!
On behalf of the Association of Computing Machinery welcome back!!! We hope you guys are pumped for the new academic year and had awesome productive summers of study, research, internships and travel. 002 and 006 Rearrangent
You will notice some significant changes to layout of the two popular undergraduate labs. Don’t be alarmed, the department implemented the new design based on lab usage statistics (most noteworthy change, the addition of mobile work stations). We know change (even small) can be difficult, but we encourage you to give the new arrangements a try and we will seek out comments and feedback later in the quarter.
Coke Closet
The beloved coke closet will make its return within the first few weeks of the quarter! Stay tuned and don’t steal!!!
ACM Website
Expect some significant changes in the next few weeks to update the usability and relevance of the ACM website http://flatline.cs.washington.edu/orgs/acm/ . We hope to make the website a more central source of information for ACM events.
CSE T-shirts
You will see cat and man shirts being displayed around the department. We will be selling these and older versions at the ACM welcome event or you can contact an ACM officer with details.
Enjoy the first day of classes!
