Resume Review and Technical Interview Coaching next week!

Hey CSE students, the career fair is coming up fast, and we have two more events to get you prepared:

Resume Review Workshop

Tuesday, October 13 from 3:00 – 5:00pm in the CSE Atrium.

This workshop is designed to allow you to gather tips from the experts to turn your resume drafts into documents that will help land your dream job or internship.

All you need to attend is a few copies of your resume–anything from a rough draft to almost-finished product is fine.  Show up anytime between 3 and 5 pm (plan on 20 minutes per review) to share your resume with 1 or more HR or technical interview experts from several of our affiliate companies, both large and small.  These experts will provide resume advice to get your resume in great shape for the Fall recruiting fair on October 19 and 21.

Technical Interview Coaching

Thursday, October 15 from 3:00 – 5:00pm in the CSE Atrium.

At this event technical interviewers from several of our industry affiliates will meet with groups of 2-4 students.  The interviewers will describe their technical interview process, give students a few sample questions and coach students on what they look for in answers.  The sessions will include sample programming questions, logic questions and puzzles. Our experts will also provide examples of what they ask in actual technical interviews and how to successfully answer to land the job.

Students will have three individual sessions of 15 minutes each with three different company volunteers (our choice, at least one, and probably two of the reps you meet with will be from a major local company).

The sessions will be for general insight and will not be in the form of interviews, although sample questions will be posed for demonstration purposes.  The upcoming October 28 Mock Technical Interviews will feature an interview format.

Space is limited –  RSVP now!  Selections will be made based on CSE seniority AND on a first come-first served basis.  The RSVP deadline for this event is Monday, October, 12.  I will let you know by end of day on Tuesday of your time of your Thursday appointment or if you were not able to secure a slot.

Please contact Jenifer (jpesicka@cs.uw.edu) if you need any additional information on this event.

We need mentors for Welcome Night, Wednesday September 30th, 2015

Hey Ugrads and Vgrads:

We need mentors!

If you have been in the department for at least one quarter, please sign up to be a mentor.  The welcome night is on the first day of the quarter, September 30th from 4:30-6:00PM (yes, food included). Please sign up via the catalyst survey by Friday, Sept. 25th at noon.   Mentors will meet in room 691 of the Allen Center for CS&E at 430 on the 30th.  If you sign up, assume we’ll need your help and plan to show up. We’ll notify you if we get too many mentors, it’s never been a problem in the past, sadly.

We have over 230 new students starting this fall so we’ll need at least 60 mentors, so please consider helping out our newly admitted students..

Hope you all had a relaxing summer and are ready to dive into a fun new year. We look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

CSE Advising: Crystal, Raven, Jen, and Maggie (Maggie joined us over the summer and is our new academic advisor)

UW CSE to host Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings vs. QANTA in trivia showdown

It’s man vs. machine when Ken Jennings, a former UW student and the most successful Jeopardy!player of all time, returns to campus to take onQANTA, a cutting-edge computer question-answering system, in a quiz bowl showdown. UW CSE is hosting the event at Kane Hall on the University of Washington’s Seattle campus on Friday, October 2.

This is not the first time Jennings has gone head-to-CPU with a computer: he came in second onJeopardy! – which he previously won 74 times in a row – to I.B.M.’s Watson in 2011. But unlike Watson, which sees the entire trivia question at once, the QANTA system decides when it has enough information to answer a question, meaning it can take part in a tossup competition. Before the game gets underway, Professor Jordan Boyd-Graber of the University of Colorado at Boulder will share details on the machine learning research that led to QANTA and how students can get involved in the project.

The event starts at 4:00 pm and is open to the public. High school and university students are encouraged to attend. Please note: advance RSVP is required. More details on the event can be found here.

Monday 6/8 @ 10:30 to 11:30 in the CSE Atrium

Four teams of students have spent the quarter on “the second half” of
a design problem. They have pushed beyond initial problem definition
to gain a deeper understanding and examine the design questions that
emerge as you really build out an interactive technology. They have
great stuff.

They are currently finalizing their websites, but you can peek at the
URLs below.

3 Day Startup even coming to UW on June 26!

Have you ever wanted to launch your own startup? 3 Day Startup (3DS) is your chance to do just that.

3DS will be coming to UW on the weekend of June 26th. The goal of this entrepreneurship intensive is to help students found companies in three days.

3 Day Startup has operated over 130 programs on 5 continents. 3DS participants have launched scores of companies, which have raised a collective $49 million in investment and been accepted to prestigious accelerators.

Over 3 days, UW students brainstorm ideas, write code, conduct market validation, devise business models, build prototypes, and pitch to investors and successful entrepreneurs. The result is an experience that challenges participants to actually innovate, build and launch companies.

And we feed you. And it’s free. And we take zero equity.

Applicants can learn more and apply at universityofwashington.3daystartup.org/
