Survey and update from Allen School Director search advisory committee

———- Forwarded message ———
From: Lucia Ersfeld <luciap@uw.edu>

Subject: Survey and update from Allen School Director search advisory committee

Sent on behalf of Professors Mari Ostendorf and Tom Daniel, co-chairs of the Allen School Director search advisory committee.

——–

Dear Faculty, Students, and Staff,

As you learned in a letter from Dean Michael Bragg, in anticipation of the conclusion of Professor Hank Levy’s current term as the inaugural Director of the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, the dean has appointed a search committee charged with identifying and recommending the best candidates to serve as the next Director. In a note to us, the dean  indicated “We all believe that the Allen School will continue to increase its national and international impact and leadership under an outstanding new director.”

Toward these ends, we now turn to you for advice regarding this search for a new Director. In particular, we would like to hear your thoughts about the challenges facing the School as well as the opportunities the director will have to build on its strengths. All specific comments will remain confidential; common themes will be summarized in the committee report to the dean.

We will be setting up in-person meetings with members of the committee. There will be 30-min time slots for designated groups scheduled to meet with us in early April, and there will also be opportunities for individuals to meet with us in confidence, should they wish.  We will send details of the schedule in the near future.

In the meantime, we have also put together an anonymous web survey, which can be found here:

https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/danielt/369317

Please respond to the poll by March 25.

We look forward to meeting with or hearing from you as we advise the dean on this important appointment. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Professor Mari Ostendorf (Committee Co-Chair)

Department of Electrical and Computer and Engineering

Professor Tom Daniel (Committee Co-Chair)

Please don’t enter the lower floor of the building between 11:00 and 2:00 – the hallway outside the auditorium and classrooms, and the stairs up to the first floor. (The robotics lab is fine for those with access.)

AND: There will be screens in the Allen Center atrium and in the Gates Center atrium for those who would like to watch the program, which takes place from 1:30-2:15.

Please read! – Thursday’s Gates Center dedication

From: Ed Lazowska lazowska@cs.washington.edu

Subject: [cs-ugrads] Please read! – Thursday’s Gates Center dedication

There will be some inconveniences on Thursday related to the dedication ceremonies for the Gates Center. Apologies in advance.

  • The Research Commons will be dedicated to event attendees from noon-4. (The 1st floor kitchen will be available for your use.)
  • The elevators will be dedicated to event attendees from noon-4. (Please use the stairs rather than the elevators.)
  • The 4th floor will be dedicated to event attendees. (Check out the 4th floor during the Open House on Friday!)

To be clear, we want our guests to see the building in action! Please use the Gates Center as you normally would, except for the above. And please be friendly to those who wander into your spaces.

Do remember my previous “watch your valuables” email. All cardkey doors will be unlocked on Thursday, and many will be unlocked on Friday. Don’t leave stuff lying around – there will be lots of people wandering around with open access.

Thanks!!

Gates Center dedication events – PLEASE READ!

———- Forwarded message ———
From: Ed Lazowska lazowska@cs.washington.edu

Subject: [cs-ugrads] Gates Center dedication events – PLEASE READ!

Members of the Allen School,

Thursday February 28th, from 1:00-4:00 is the formal dedication event for the Bill & Melinda Gates Center. This event is donor-focused, invitation-only (due to the limited capacity of even our spiffy new 4th floor Event Center). There will be a program in the Event Center from 1:30-2:15. Then there will be both escorted and self-guided tours of the building and various labs from 2:15-4:00.

IMPORTANT: All of the card-key doors will be unlocked during the tours. If you’re a resident of the Gates Center, DO NOT leave valuables exposed during this period – wallets, laptops, etc. I doubt our donors want your wallet – quite the opposite! But random people may wander into the building, and we will have no way to restrict their access to internal spaces.

ALSO IMPORTANT: As you always do, please have a smile on your face and welcome people into your space. We had a “preview event” for a subset of donors a month ago, and Dave Cutler was thrilled to see the Dave Cutler lab full of students, and to have one student recognize him and thank him. That sort of thing goes a LONG way!

Friday from 2:00-5:00 is an Open House targeting regional alums, people from across the campus, and members of the Allen School. (All of you who are not actually doing demos are encouraged to take advantage of the Open House!) There will again be both escorted and self-guided tours of the building and various labs, and again all of the card-key doors will be unlocked. The Open House will be publicized pretty widely on campus, so please be particularly alert – “if you see something, say something.” (Don’t call me – I’m a wimp. Call Tracy!)

The Microsoft Cafe is supposed to begin operation by Thursday – it should be up and running for the dedication and thereafter.

Finally, a plea to all occupants of the Gates Center: Please do everything you can to keep the place looking great for our donors and guests.

THANKS!

Welcome back to CSE!

Dear CSE Students, welcome back to UW!

This is an exciting week as we open our new building to the public for the first time!  You’ll notice we’re still settling in and there is a lot of activity in the new Gates Center, but we hope you enjoy your new labs, they are beautiful!

A few start of the quarter notes:

  1. CSE Ugrad SLACK Channel: Uw-cse-ugrad.slack.com now has an #asktheadvisers channel monitored by the staff advisers, so please feel free to utilize that space.  You will need to join with your @cs email address. Your posts are public and not FERPA compliant, so you should use this system for general questions only.
  2. We have a career fair on Monday (1/14) and Tuesday (1/15) next week, please pay careful attention to Kim and Kay’s emails on this subject as there are some changes this year.
  3. There are several feedback channels you should be aware of, first, you can always come to your CSE advising team with any course related concerns. You can also give feedback on line: https://www.cs.washington.edu/students/ugrad/give_feedback
  4. The deadline to apply to graduate this winter if you haven’t already filed online is January 16th. You should go to the graduation page for all the details on filing.
  5. Our advising team has moved to the Gates Center, most of you have found us already, but just a reminder in case you haven’t yet. Some of the building is still under construction, but the first floor (your floor!) is open for business.
  6. We have a team of 7 peer advisers who would love to talk to you more about courses, extracurricular opportunities, and any other advising questions you might have. They are at all quick question sessions and at the advising front desk from 10-12 and 1-5 most days. Stop by and say hi!
  7. And finally, hopefully you are all getting into the courses you need. We expect there will be some drops in the next few days so sign up on Notify if you’re still trying to get a space. If you are not signed up for any CSE courses, or need a course to graduate this quarter, please get in touch with the advising team so we can try to help you out.

Reminder – please fill out this survey – free swag raffle if you do

So far we have 110 out of 1300+ugrads who have responded to this survey, please try to take a few minutes to help us out.

__________________________________________________________

Dear all CSE Majors!

We have a favor to ask all of you. (And there is possibly some swag involved)

The Computing Research Association (CRA) is interested in career development
among students in computing fields. To that end, I encourage you to complete their
survey, which will take about 20 minutes to complete. (something to do while sitting taking a break from finals)

Your contribution to this research helps us understand factors related to academic
retention and persistence.

In exchange for your time, you will be given the opportunity to enter a raffle for
some swanky Allen School SWAG!

If you are interested in completing the survey, please follow the link below:
https://cerp.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_dm0rvqb8dwyTast

Note that if you completed a survey for CRA in the past, you may have been contacted
directly by CRA this month. If you have already completed this survey, please disregard
this message.

Thank you!
