Labs – keep up the good fight (it’s starting to go south little by little)

This Saturday we are going to have an Open House in the building for middle school and high school students. There will be over 500 students milling about from 1-5pm.

Let’s show these folks how much we respect our environment and make sure the labs are spotless.

There is a recommendation that 4pm on Thursday everyone who can, stop by to help make sure they are tidy.  We appreciate your time. Let’s keep up the good work your comrades started and keep your space looking nice. Remember, if everyone picked up at least one or two things a day, we’d keep the inside and outside of our campus looking nice.

~CSE Advising

PS: Note LAB 002 will be in use from 12-5pm

PPS: We are still in desperate need of volunteers for Saturday, email Allison Obourn <aeobourn@cs.washington.edu> if you have time to spare please, it will be fun! No experience needed.

atrium accident

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Hank Levy <levy@cs.washington.edu>
Subject: [cs-ugrads] atrium accident
To: researchers@cs.washington.edu, grads@cs.washington.edu, cs-staff@cs.washington.edu, cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu

Last Wednesday, there was an accident in the atrium, where a cell phone fell from above and struck an EE student in the head.   The student was taken to the ER and she sustained a concussion but should be ok.    In any case, I want to remind you to be *extremely* careful with your belongings on the stairways, bridges, or hallways that overlook the atrium.    We were very lucky this time – it could have been much worse.

If you were involved or were there and saw the accident, please send me email — I just want to know what happened in more detail so we can find ways to avoid accidents such as this in the future.

Thanks

Hank

College of Engineering Student Advisory Council 2014-15 – Apply by tomorrow 11/5!

The College of Engineering Student Advisory Council (COESAC) is seeking nominations, including self-nominations, of students who would be interested in serving on the Council for the 2014-15 academic year.  To that end, we ask that departments to circulate this call for nominations to undergraduate and graduate students in their department as soon as possible.  It would be particularly helpful if undergraduate and graduate advisors would call this opportunity to the attention of students whom they believe would be particularly effective members of this Council and encourage them to apply.

Apply here: http://tinyurl.com/COESAC2014

Deadline: TOMORROW November 5th, 2014

COESAC provides a student perspective on planning and budgeting issues for the College of Engineering.  The group, which consists of approximately 12 undergraduates, 5 graduate students, and 3 at-large representatives, meets on Friday afternoons from 3:30-5:00 in the COE Dean’s conference room to discuss a broad range of issues.  During the 2013-14 academic year, COESAC submitted recommendations the Dean on issues ranging from changing the admissions model for UW COE departments to providing opportunities for multi-disciplinary capstones.  COESAC seeks to include a diverse range of student perspectives in its conversations, and to bring about tangible changes to the student experience in the College of Engineering.

The time commitment involved in serving on COESAC is significant.  The Council meets at least once a month, and will often generate its own agenda.  Students should be self-motivated to provide a student voice on issues facing the College.  The Dean will provide a charge to the Council at the beginning of the year and will come to the Council with planning questions for student input, but the Council will also be asked to identify one to two areas of need within the College and work independently on proposals for solving that need.  Applicants should ensure that they are available to meet on Friday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:00 for the duration of the academic year.  It has proved just too difficult to schedule meetings at any other time.  Dean Bragg or his designee will attend most of the Council’s meetings, except when the Council chooses to meet without him.  Although Council members are not strictly “representatives” of any particular student group (that is the role of ASUW), they are encouraged to solicit and present to the Council the views of as wide a cross-section of students as possible.

Students interested in applying to be members of COESAC for the 2014-15 academic year, should submit an application via Catalyst (above), detailing their qualifications for serving on the Council.

Councilmember Duties

Student Advisory Councilmember Terms of Service:

  • Councilmembers will serve 1-year terms with 1-year reappointment possible.
  • Staggered terms (i.e., some will proceed for re-appointment at end of first year. The council will ask for volunteers to serve an additional year or end terms as needed for staggered terms.
  • Reappointment does not require a new application.
  • Total annual commitment: minimum 35-45 hours, including meeting time, preparation for meetings, and follow-through work arising from decisions at meetings.

Meeting Schedule:

  • Monthly meetings, except summer quarter (~8/year).
  • Standing meeting time set annually (1.5 hours/meeting).
  • Dean’s Office staff will attend meetings depending on agenda.
  • The Dean or his designee will likely attend most meetings as well, depending on schedules and the agenda.

Key topics that may be addressed annually by the Student Advisory Council:

  • Budget issues and planning
  • Student recruitment and retention (focus on increasing diversity)
  • Student engagement outside of the classroom
  • Course fees
  • Academic Programs (new programs and expansion of existing programs)

Graduation June 2015

We just wanted to update everyone on our 2015 Graduation Celebration for CSE.  In years past our event has been bright and early on the same day of the UW ceremony. This resulted in a very long day for CSE students and their families. Worse yet, there was only room to give each student tickets for themselves and up to 2 or 3 guests.  That is no longer the case.

This year, we have secured Hec Ed Pavilion here on the UW campus for Friday evening June 12th, 2015. Our Departmental Graduation Celebration will start at 8PM and run until approximately 930PM.     Door will open at 7PM for seating.  There will be no need for any tickets this year, you may bring whoever you wish to the CSE event. Tickets are still required for the UW event however on June 13th.

We will likely have a reception of cookies and coffee either before or after the event, the details are still being worked out.  We just wanted to give you an early warning on the date and location.

Important notes for fall quarter – advising, overloading, graduation appts, tutoring, etc.

Hey folks, welcome back to UW!

Overloading: If you are still trying to get into a CSE course, plan to attend the first day and put your name on the overload list. We’ll try to make decisions by Monday.

Dropin advising: It’s going to be very busy this week.  If you have immediate registration issues, feel free to come to dropins this week, if you want to look at your four year plan… let’s wait until you fill out a MyPlan and then come see us after a couple of weeks have passed…

Graduation Apps: We will email in a couple of weeks about graduation appointments. Everyone planning to graduate this quarter or winter or spring, will need to come see an advisor.  We’ll have online appointments to sign up for when it’s time to complete this process. The first week isn’t a good time for that meeting, we might miss something, and that would make you sad.

Email:  We get a lot of email, but here is a tip, if you need a section change or something registration related and you give us ALL the info you think we might need (student number, sln’s etc) so we don’t have to look things up, there is a higher chance we’ll answer your email sooner rather than later.  Please try to give us at least 48 hours to return your email before pinging us again. Sending an email every hour or two doesn’t increase your chances of getting spot in the coveted class…

Tutoring: We do have some limited tutoring available, sign up online if you are interested. These small groups of 1-4 are led by a graduate student tutor.  http://www.cs.washington.edu/students/ugrad/tutoring

390C: Reminder, still space in the 2 credit 390C course. Search for 390c on the blog for more details.

Welcome Night: We did have enough mentors sign up, so if you signed up, please plan to join us a week from today. Than you everyone, our students are awesome!

Hope you all had a relaxing summer break and are ready to dive into a fun quarter. We look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

CSE Advising: Crystal, Raven, Jen, and Tina

We need mentors to sign up please!! Deadline Tues Sept. 23rd, event is Tues Sept. 30th

Hey folks,

We need mentors! If you have been in the department for at least one quarter, please sign up to be a mentor.  The welcome night is on Tuesday, September 30th (Tuesday *after* the start of the quarter) from 3:30-5:00PM (yes, food included).  I know this conflicts with some courses and TA’ing, sorry about that, we didn’t have a lot of options. Please sign up via the catalyst survey by Tuesday Sept. 23rd at noon.   Mentors will meet in room 691 of the Allen Center for CS&E at 330 on the 30th.  If you sign up, assume we’ll need your help and plan to show up. We’ll notify you if we get too many mentors, it’s never been a problem in the past, sadly.

We have over 200 new students starting this fall so we’ll need at least 60 mentors, so please consider helping out our newly admitted students..

Hope you all had a relaxing summer and are ready to dive into a fun new year. We look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

CSE Advising: Crystal, Raven, Jen, and Tina (Elise is still with us, but she is now the graduate program advisor for the PhD students)
