Students interested in Data Science Option

For students pursuing the Data Science option, we’ve been getting a lot of questions around the seminar requirement. Here is a current update since the one credit CSE course is not available this year.

1. For Seniors graduating in the next three quarters, you can sign up for CHEM E 599 the data science graduate level seminar.  This quarter it’s Tuesdays at 430. If you want to register for fall quarter, please email Crystal at ceney@cs.uw.edu,  it will also be offered Winter and Spring quarter, but again, just available to graduating seniors.

2. There is also a 3 credit Soc 201B special topics data science course offered this fall that meets the requirement, but if you are not already registered, it is too late for this quarter.

3. In the future, students should plan to take the Soc 201B course to complete the seminar requirement for Data Science.  Again, please note it is a 3 credit course.

Updates on trying to get into full CSE courses

Here is a quick update on full CSE courses.  If you are a current CSE Major and trying to get into a full CSE course, please plan to attend the first day.  If you are unable to enroll by this Friday, the instructors will provide an overload form to fill out.  We already completed one round of early overloads (getting into full courses) and accommodated 51 students, so hopefully that will help ease the fall angst a bit.

As always let advising know if you have something of concern that has not been addressed.

Sincerely,

CSE Advising

Fall quarter is just around the corner and we need CSE Mentors!

Welcome back folks, it’s almost time to kick off the new year!

To do that effectively, we need veteran CSE majors (you have completed at least one quarter in the major) to mentor our new students, and we have a LOT of new majors.  Just over 300 to put things in perspective.  Ideally we’d have at least 75 mentors.  Even with 75, that means everyone will have a small group of mentees, 4-5 each.

Welcome night will be Wednesday, Sept. 27th from 430-600 or 630 approximately.  If you can help us out, please fill out the survey to volunteer

There will be burritos for those who participate, but the REAL reason to volunteer, is to help all of our new majors learn how welcoming and inclusive this community of undergraduates are here in UW CSE.

We look forward to seeing you all back at UW in one week!

Solicitation for Research Award Nominees

Hello!

Are you a fantastic undergrad researcher? Or, do you have a peer who is worthy of recognition for their research?

Nominations for the prestigious CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award are due at the end of October, and CSE will be nominating four students. Please email Maggie Ryan (maggiem@cs.washington.edu) ASAP if you would like to recommend yourself or one of your peers for CSE to consider.
“This award program recognizes undergraduate students in North American colleges and universities who show outstanding potential in an area of computing research.  The award is primarily about research. While it is expected that successful nominees will have excellent academic records and will have engaged in some form of service (e.g., club leadership, teaching, peer tutoring), excellence in research is the primary consideration.” More info here. Feel free to email Maggie with questions.

Capstone and other Registration notes

We are finally ready to open up the capstone registration for 2017-2018. It will close on September 6th, 2017.  While there are exceptions, most students should have completed the majority of their 300 level courses and ideally one 400 before taking a capstone course.  The details that we have on each capstone course in the coming year are listed on the capstone experience page.

The link to pre-register is also on that page.    Around Sept. 15th we’ll send out capstone assignments.  You will be sent add codes if the course is being offered this fall, otherwise, you’ll receive add codes during winter and spring registration.

Please note that CSE 421 recently had to change times due to an unavoidable conflict.  We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.  The course will now be taught MWF 430-520PM.

Apply now to be a CSE Peer Adviser!

Hello, CSE majors! If you’re interested in helping students and working with the CSE Advising team, consider applying to be a 2017-18 Peer Adviser: Full position description here.

In brief: The CSE Peer Advisers work 5-10 hours per week during the quarter. Hiring details:

Application open now, closing Monday May 1

Start date: Autumn quarter 2017, preferably for the full year but dates are negotiable
Training should take place in Spring and Summer 2017; exact dates are flexible

To: Researchers <researchers@cs.washington.edu>, cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu

Please join us to see 16 projects exploring different approaches to self-tracking. Teams of students have explored everything from mobile health and wellness apps, to a smart bookmark, to a talking mirror, to an adorable panda that watches you drive:
Teams of students have spent the quarter identifying a problem, conducting fieldwork to better understand the opportunity, exploring potential designs, and refining those designs in iterative testing. They are currently finalizing their websites and deliverables, but take a sneak peek above.
We’ll be in the CSE atrium on Monday @ 11:00.
There will be cookies, and we’re co-hosting with the CSE Accessibility Capstone.
Please join us!

Subject: [cs-ugrads] Chaos in the Atrium!
To: “cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu” <cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu>

On Thursday starting at 3:30 we’ll be hosting an event for about 450
people (alumni, friends in the professional community, and UW leadership) celebrating the start of
our 50th Anniversary year. (In March 1967, the UW Board of Regents
created the “Computer Science Group” and authorized the granting of
graduate degrees.)

Apologies for the inconvenience!
