FAQs:

Q. Can we have fewer than five members on our team?

We strongly recommend having the maximum number of members – any less and you’ll lose your competitive edge.

Q. Do you have to be a current student to participate?

You must be a first, second or third-year undergraduate student currently enrolled at University of Washington. Seniors and graduate students are not eligible to participate.

Q. Can we replace a member before the start of the event?

Absolutely! Just let us know via googlegames@google.com. Be sure to include: the full name and email of the new team member, the full name of who is being replaced, your school name and your team name.

Q. Should our team wear costumes?

Show your team’s spirit however you choose: costumes, uniforms, team dance, team flag or poster, cheer, fight song, etc. A prize will be awarded to the team with the most spirit.

Q. Will transportation be provided?

Unfortunately we will not be providing transportation to the Seattle Google Games.

Q. Will food be provided?

We will provide a light breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks. If you have any dietary restrictions, please note this in the form and we will be sure to accommodate you.

Q. When will our team receive a confirmation about The Games?

After the registration deadline, we will reach out to confirm team selection and provide more details. Not all registered teams will be selected due to space limitations.

Q. Do I need to bring my own laptop?

It will give your team a competitive advantage to have all members work from their own laptop in the challenges. If you don’t have your own, see if you can borrow one from a friend. And don’t forget the charger!

The Putnam Competition is the world’s preeminent mathematics
competition. Faculty in the math department run prep sessions for
students interested in competing, or just interested in honing their
skills in mathematics problem solving. CSE students have regularly
participated in the past, and in some cases have done extraordinarily
well in the competition itself.

There’s a poster attached! Please consider this if you’ve got a math
inclination!  putnam

Present your posters at the 2017 CSE Spring Poster Session!

Hello CSE undergrads!

We are excited to announce our first-ever Paul G. Allen School Spring Poster Session! All students who have participated in any capstone or project courses this year are encouraged to apply to present their posters.

The Event

The 2017 Allen School undergraduate poster session will be held on Thursday, June 8th, from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Atrium. The poster session is open to all BS and BS/MS students who participated in a capstone course (such as 475 and 481) or project course (such as 440 and 446) during the 2016-17 academic year.

This will be a more formal event, with high profile CSE alumni and friends coming to view your work. Attendance will be by invitation only. Presenting students are welcome to bring family members, as it will be the day before our CSE commencement ceremony.

Because space is limited, there is a short application process. Student posters will be selected based on various factors including the quality of the abstract in the application, the likely interests of the Allen School alumni/friends visiting, and our goal to present a wide range of ‘cool’ projects from multiple courses.

Why participate?

  1. There will be a prize! A panel of judges in attendance will vote on the 2017 Project of the Year. Presenters of the winning poster, in addition to all the kudos associated with being the first-ever awardees, will receive $1,000 to split among the group.
  1. You can have another chance to show off that project you have worked so hard on. Presenters will get to meet and talk about their projects to smart, talented friends of CSE.

The Details

  • At least one member of the team must be at the poster session to represent the poster.
  • At least one member of the team who will be present at the event must be enrolled as a CS, CE, or CSEM student.
  • Fall 2016, Winter 2017, and Spring 2017 capstone and poster project courses are all eligible to participate.

Application Process

Fill out this short form: https://goo.gl/forms/9aMhTLGdqPQp5HYB2

Applications are due by end of day on May 7th

Presenters will be notified by May 12th.

$10k student prize for May 20 Hackathon

From: Valerie Overlan <overlan@uw.edu> Date: Wed, Apr 26, 2017 at 10:38 AM Subject:From: Valerie Overlan <overlan@uw.edu> Date: Wed, Apr 26, 2017 at 10:38 AM Subject: $10k student prize for May 20 Hackathon To: “Edward D. Lazowska” <lazowska@uw.edu> Cc: David Iyall <iyall@uw.edu>, Ted Hanson <tjhanson@uw.edu>

Hi Ed,

Ted Hanson and I met with the folks from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency last Friday and they shared the new date for their annual Hackathon. Here is the link to their promotion and registration that I also sent to some other departments in Engineering:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/expeditionhacks-hackathon-series-seattle-2017-tickets-31838231006?aff=Adwords&gclid=Cj0KEQjwioHIBRCes6nP56Ti1IsBEiQAxxb5G4H5O3rv3Cqv9P9J5FkYdaibC_Enhm6mMgll8KbosC4aAtMr8P8HAQ

Because they changed the date, they said there’s not been a large turnout so far, so they’ve raised the first prize from $4k to $10k. Some of our students would have a very good shot at this, but it’s right around the corner!

Best,

Val
