Engineering Networking Night, Wed Nov 7 in Atrium

“Engineering Networking Night” is a chance for current students in the
College of Engineering to talk to alums in their field.  This year
it’s being held in the Allen Center Atrium from 7-9 on Wednesday
November 7 – super convenient for CSE students to participate.  There
will be 6 CSE alums visiting, along with alums from all other
programs:

Then go add social features to all your apps! Dinner and Facebook giveaways will be provided to attendees.

Seattle Women’s Startup Weekend

Announcing (the first ever…)

Seattle Women’s Startup Weekend

July 13 – 15, 2012

http://seattlewomen.startupweekend.org

Location:

Saturday and Sunday hosted at:

Madrona Venture Group

1000 Second Avenue, Suite 3700

Seattle, WA  98104

Friday evening & Sunday evening presentations hosted at:

Perkins Coie

1201 Third Avenue, Suite 4900

Seattle, WA  98101

Ready to be part of something big?  Join us: we’re assembling 90 of the most talented entrepreneurial-minded women (and men) for a very special edition of Startup Weekend on July 13-15.

We provide the working space, brain fuel, food, mentors, new friends, and inspiring speakers and judges. You supply the energy and innovation to build something big over the weekend.

Bring an idea, a talented friend or potential co-founder, or just yourself! Startup Weekend hosts a series of events in cities around the world and offers a way to test ideas for new startups, contribute to those ideas, and even meet potential co-founders. Ideas are shared on Friday evening and the event culminates in final presentations to an all-star panel of judges on Sunday evening. This particular Startup Weekend will have a unique spin: a focus on connecting and showcasing the talents of women entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs.  Men who wish to attend Women’s Startup Weekend can do so… if they find a female participant to bring them along!

We only have 90 spots available and we expect the event to sell out fast.

Get ready to build something exciting.  See you July 13!

FAQ’s

Why a women-focused Startup Weekend?

The entrepreneurial talent we see from women in Seattle is inspiring, and we are excited about creating an event that will showcase it.  A big goal for the event is also to provide the opportunity for the aspiring women entrepreneurs in our community to (1) get inspired by an idea/product/team… perhaps even enough to explore starting their own venture, or (2) become more connected with other brilliant entrepreneurially-minded individuals in Seattle and thus more engaged within our local entrepreneurial ecosystem.  The original initiative behind this event came from the team at Madrona Venture Group, and they along with Perkins Coie and Square 1 Bank will be sponsoring and hosting the weekend.

Are men allowed to attend Women’s Startup Weekend?

Yes… but there’s a catch!  If you are a man who wishes to attend Women’s Startup Weekend, you can if and only if you find a woman participant to bring you along.  Since Seattle Women’s Startup Weekend is about connecting entrepreneurial women through the process of building exciting companies, we want to connect them to the best resources and people out there – that includes both men and women.

That said, to ensure that we maintain a high percentage of female participants, the number of tickets we issue to men will be limited (there will be a wait list).  If you’re a man who wants to attend, find a female participant to bring you along, and do so quickly! (Note: Each female participant can only bring one male participant.)

Will the participants be required to pitch or work on “women-focused” startup ideas?

No, participants can pitch and work on any kind of startup idea they wish.

Resume and Cover Letter Workshops with the CLUE Writing Center – tonight and Wednesday

This could be helpful for those of you who are looking for summer internships and/or full-time positions. If you are still looking, don’t forget to check the CSE Ugrad Jobs Blog. There are still companies looking to hire for this summer! (Remember, you are not automatically subscribed to the Jobs Blog. If you want to receive email notifications you need to edit your settings here: https://dada.cs.washington.edu/ugradjobs/)

The CLUE Writing Center will be hosting a series of workshops on understanding the basics of resume and cover letter writing for job/internship applications. During these workshops, we present students with strategies they should be aware of with regards to these fairly structured documents, as well as highlight the major mistakes those of us just entering the job market/looking to gain experience often make.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would be so kind as to let your department’s students know via e-mail when these will be happening. The dates and locations are as follows (and both workshops take place from 7 PM–8 PM):

Monday, 4/30: MGH 228
Wednesday, 5/2: MGH 228

Also, for everyone’s information, we keep our workshop schedule updated on our Facebook:http://www.facebook.com/cluewc

And we’d like to let our students know that we’re offering a new service that involves help specifically on grammatical/linguistic concerns. Students may now send in specific questions/excerpts from their essays tocluewcdocs@gmail.com, which we’ll respond to in 2 business days, and check out our advice on syntax and similar concerns on our blog, located at: http://depts.washington.edu/clue/writingcenter/

Thank you in advance for your assistance, and for passing this info along.

Best,
Chelsie
