Three recruiting days: October 23, 24, 25

——— Forwarded message ———-
From: Ed Lazowska <lazowska@cs.washington.edu>

Subject: [cs-ugrads] Three recruiting days: October 23, 24, 25
To: Cs-Grads <cs-grads@cs.washington.edu>, “cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu” <cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu>
Cc: Hank Levy <levy@cs.washington.edu>, Kay Beck-Benton <kbeck@cs.washington.edu>

There are 3 recruiting days coming up in one week. PLEASE plan to
attend all 3, and PLEASE get your resume into the resume book.

Full information is here:
https://www.cs.washington.edu/industrial_affiliates/meetings/2017/studentinfo

The short version of the story:

– Most of our Industry Affiliate members care much more about the
ability to recruit our students than about the research we’re doing.

– Yes, jobs are plentiful right now. But it hasn’t always been that
way, and it won’t always be that way. Turning out and showing our
Industry Affiliates what great students we have is a favor to future
generations – the companies will keep coming even when positions are
tight.

– The CSE Atrium has become too small for our recruiting fairs; 2 of
the 3 will be in the HUB Ballroom this year.

– Data Science fair: Monday October 23, 1-5, HUB Ballroom.
(Campus-wide, but organized by CSE on behalf of the eScience
Institute.)

– Established Company fair: Tuesday October 24, 11-4, HUB Ballroom.
This is for CSE students only.

– Startup Company fair: Wednesday Octobrer 25, 1-5, CSE Atrium. This
is for CSE students only.

PLEASE get your resume in the resume book.

PLEASE get your Allen School nametag prior to the events.

PLEASE attend all 3 fairs – make us look good!

If you are graduating fall, winter, spring or summer – please read this message

Applying for Graduation

Graduation is not automatic. Generally, you should file for graduation two or three quarters before you plan to graduate (for example, file during autumn quarter if you plan to graduate at the end of spring quarter). If you are pursuing a double major or double degree, you will need to make an appointment with your other department, as well. If you have a minor, we will check your minor requirements at your CSE graduation appointment.

The last day to file your graduation application is the third Friday of the quarter you plan to graduate. You must see an advisor before then.

Please read the information on the graduation page thoroughly, and then book your appointments using the links on that page.

There are also instructions on how to check to see if you have filed previously, if you can’t remember whether you have or have not.

2 credit seminar on global issue of equal access to public spaces and to information and communications technology (ICT) by persons with disabilities.

CSE490D: 13321 CSE    490  D     SPECIAL TOPICS C   W    0230-0420

2 credits, open to all CSE majors

In this seminar we consider the complex relationship between people with disabilities and technology from the lens of designers and engineers. The course primarily addresses the global issue of equal access to public spaces and to information and communications technology (ICT) by persons with disabilities. We examine the ways in which technology can be both assistive and a potential barrier for diverse populations, and in that context we will review a host of devices and solutions created to improve quality of life, function and independence for people with disabilities. Additionally, we will explore the role of technology designers and engineers in designing for equity in a technology-laden society, and therein explore the fundamental connection between critical social theory and participatory design. Students are asked to participate in class discussions about the readings, complete short assignments and present their ideas for technology innovations that embody all-inclusive design. This course will prepare students to pursue lead roles in participatory design teams in the context of Accessibility Capstone and Husky ADAPT VIP.

Updates on trying to get into full CSE courses

Here is a quick update on full CSE courses.  If you are a current CSE Major and trying to get into a full CSE course, please plan to attend the first day.  If you are unable to enroll by this Friday, the instructors will provide an overload form to fill out.  We already completed one round of early overloads (getting into full courses) and accommodated 51 students, so hopefully that will help ease the fall angst a bit.

As always let advising know if you have something of concern that has not been addressed.

Sincerely,

CSE Advising

Patience with CSE Ugrad Advising Requested

Hello all CSE students!   We are looking forward to having you all back on campus this fall.  I wanted to alert you to a few changes in CSE Ugrad Advising.

First, Jenifer Hiigli is still on leave (with her beautiful new baby boy!). She will slowly start integrating again in the next few months but she will not be available for appointments at this time. Raven is still seeing some students, but is mainly focused on diversity and outreach work, which leaves you with Maggie, Chloe and me and our three new peer advisors.

To top it off, we have a record number of undergraduates now (over 1000) and another 1000 prospective freshman on campus interested in CSE this fall.  Soooo, things are going to be busy.

For the first week, if you have something relevant to courses THIS quarter, or an immediate concern, of course come to dropins. We have revised dropin hours this quarter to match our peer advisors schedules better.  They are as follows:

Monday: 10am to noon

Tuesday: 2-4PM

Wednesday 2-4PM

Thursday 2-4PM

Friday 10-11AM

Please do not come in the first week for graduation appointments. We will be setting up Graduation Appointments in the next week or two, so stay tuned for more on that later.

And always, if you have to email us about needing something done with your courses, please include your full name, your student number and the slns for what you need help with so we can help you more quickly.

Finally, thanks to all who signed up to be mentors, we had a huge spike in the last 24 hours and are all set.  If you signed up, you’ll be receiving information by Wednesday morning on your mentee assignments.

Thank you everyone and welcome back!

Crystal, Raven, Maggie and Chloe

Reminder – we still need about 25 mentors

Hey folks, just a reminder, please sign up to be a CSE mentor if you have been in the major for at least a quarter. We are in need of about 25 additional students.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Welcome back folks, it’s almost time to kick off the new year!

To do that effectively, we need veteran CSE majors (you have completed at least one quarter in the major) to mentor our new students, and we have a LOT of new majors.  Just over 300 to put things in perspective.  Ideally we’d have at least 75 mentors.  Even with 75, that means everyone will have a small group of mentees, 4-5 each.

Welcome night will be Wednesday, Sept. 27th from 430-600 or 630 approximately.  If you can help us out, please fill out the survey to volunteer

There will be burritos for those who participate, but the REAL reason to volunteer, is to help all of our new majors learn how welcoming and inclusive this community of undergraduates are here in UW CSE.

We look forward to seeing you all back at UW in one week!
