All students must file a graduation application by the 3rd Friday of the quarter they wish to graduate. You can file up to three quarters in advance if you also want to register using graduating senior priority.
If you are wondering if you’ve filed your paperwork, go to your MyCSE page and see if there is a date in the projected graduation box on the right. If there is, you’re all set. If there isn’t, and you think you came in to file, email one of us to check on your application. If you didn’t come in and you want to graduate, you should come see us by Friday for winter graduation and before the 3rd Friday in spring for spring graduation.
If you apply to graduate by this Friday, you’ll still be able to graduate this quarter.
Applying for Graduation”: https://www.cs.washington.edu/students/ugrad/graduation/
Additionally, the CSE department is participating in a campus-wide survey of graduating students. Your participation is optional. If you participate, we will complete your graduation paperwork normally, then ask a few questions about the most challenging work you completed as a student. It will only take an additional 5 minutes. To prepare for this survey, you may want to take a look at your CSE courses and spend a minute or two thinking about which one stretched your thinking the most. If you were not asked about this survey and would like to participate, please stop in to dropins or make an individual appointment, we’d love to hear from as many of you as possible.

As the stress level rises, it’s a good idea to remind all of our students that there are resources on campus to help if you are feeling overwhelmed or know fellow students who are troubled. Here is the UW link to resources:

UW Hall Health office also wanted us to advertise these openings specifically:

Based on feedback we gathered last week, there will be an offering of CSE 341 added this spring taught by Professor Grossman. We will still try to overload a few students into winter’s 341 offering at the start of the quarter, but most of you should plan to take it this spring. The overload process for 341 is the same as it is for most other CSE courses.
Other notes:
Reminder that there is still space in the robotics course, CSE 490 for winter.
We’ll release information on additional space in 484 by Friday of this week.
The updated schedule of courses can be found here: https://www.cs.washington.edu/education/time-sched/
December 10, 2012
We are planning to add more space to CSE 484, but you must fill out the survey if you want to be considered. Professor Kohno will likely be on sabbatical next year, so while we are hoping to offer security during the 2013-2014 academic year, we can’t promise it. With that being said, please fill out this survey if you want to take 484 this winter. You will need to have completed CSE 332 and 351. Experience with C programming is important, so 333 might also be helpful.
Unlike the rest of the courses where we will overload during the first week of the quarter, we will give space in 484 to some of the students who fill out this survey. Priority will go first to graduating students, then to students who will graduate before the next possible offering.
We will not be able to accommodate all students, but hopefully opening space in 484 will also offset pressure in some of the other courses.

Subject: [cs-ugrads] building hours over break
Dear Students,
As the quarter comes to a close and many of you leave campus for break, we wanted to let you know that there are special holiday hours for the Allen Center during that time.
Dec. 19-Jan 6th
Weekdays: building open 8am – 4pm
Weekends and holidays: no access, building will be closed to students
This means you will not have cardkey access to the building on weekends, holidays, and from 4pm – 8am on weekdays.
Normal building access will resume for everyone on Monday, January 7th, which is the first day of winter quarter this year.
Have a great holiday!
Hank

Instructor: Todorov
CSE 490P
MW: 12pm – 1:20 pm MGH 248
SLN: 20775
Prereq: still TBD, likely 332 and possibly 333
This class will be based on the ongoing DARPA Robotics Challenge (see http://theroboticschallenge.org/), which aims to develop robots that can operate semi-autonomously in disaster areas. We will work with a physically-realistic simulation of the most advanced humanoid robot ever made (by Boston Dynamics), and try to make it get in and out of cars, walk across challenging terrain, and connect hoses. Possible projects include perception (based on stereo cameras, LIDAR and IMU) as well as feedback control of the joints in real time. The instructor is leading UW’s team of postdocs and graduate students participating in the actual DARPA competition. Students in the class will have an opportunity to contribute to this effort and compete with the best roboticists from around the world.

Hey folks,
I know we had told a few of you that there might be a winter application for the BS/MS (5th year masters) program. Unfortunately, we will not be having an additional application cycle this winter. With only 20 new slots for the program every year, it was decided that we would keep a single application cycle. We generally open the application in late May and make decisions by mid-June. The possibility of a winter application was always tentative, but since the decision is now final, we wanted to alert you in case this alters any plans.
We do understand that a once a year application doesn’t work well for all students, and we are sympathetic to your various situations. If you have questions about how this might effect you, please don’t hesitate to contact the CSE advising staff. Elise and Crystal are the most familiar with the 5th year program, so try to see one of them.
We will have a BS/MS program information session this winter quarter.

Hey Folks,
First, we know there are some issues with full classes, and we want you to know we’re working on it. We are in the process of raising some limits right now and hope to continue to make room over the next week. At this point, you should continue to watch the schedule for open space. We will not be overloading any courses until the quarter starts. Also, PLEASE do not ‘game’ the system by registering for everything and holding spaces… this just makes our job harder trying to figure out how to get everyone what they need.
Please do go ahead and try to register for the courses you want, even if they are full. When you attempt to register for a full lecture and section, it triggers our system to count the number of denied students. If we see a course with a bunch of denies, we know where to try to put resources to expand classes.
Also, please note that we generally find a way to make this work out. So please be patient for the next week or two and let us see where demand is and where we can add room.
Once the quarter starts, attend the courses you want to enroll in and add your name to the overload list. In almost every case we are able to find room for everyone who needs a course, or we are able to provide a good back-up plan if we can’t.
Keep in mind there are a lot of factors that go into raising limits: you need a room, you need a room big enough at the right time and you need TA’s…. I promise you we are trying.
Sincerely,
CSE Advising

Hi all,
We are going to be very short-staffed in the advising office from Monday, October 22nd – Monday, October 29th. We will not have drop-in hours during that period. Advising will be by appointment only.
With that in mind, we ask students with non-urgent questions to please hold off on seeing an advisor until Tuesday, October 30th or later. If you need to come in to complete graduation paperwork next week, or have an urgent issue that needs to be addressed immediately, please write in to ugrad-advisor to request an appointment. Quick questions can also be sent to that address to be answered by email.
Thank you! We appreciate your patience over this next week.
Megan

If this is your final quarter and you want to graduate in December, you must file graduation paperwork by tomorrow!
For students graduating winter, spring, or summer: If you apply to graduate by Oct. 26th, you’ll receive graduating senior priority registration for winter and spring. Your final deadline to file graduation paperwork is the third Friday of the quarter in which you want to graduate.
To book a graduation appointment, please follow the steps on “Applying for Graduation:” https://www.cs.washington.edu/students/ugrad/graduation/
