FYI, we’ll be updating the blogs soon with the new students being added, and graduated students being removed.

I’ll be removing all graduated students from the news blog and mailing lists in the next few days, just a heads up.  The jobs’ blog is self maintained, so I will not remove you from that one at this time.

A few housekeeping things before I remove you from the blogs (I know you’ll miss our emails….)

1. Crucial: you MUST fill out the exit survey on your MyCSE this is an important last step. Ideally you’ll fill out the optional one too, tell us what you like, what you don’t like, so we can improve the program in the future.

It has come to our attention recently that the wording in the new online feedback forms for courses could be misleading.  You should know that the multiple choice answers are aggregated and reported to the chair of the department, but free-form written comments are only seen by individual instructors and no one else.

If you have feedback on a course (either positive or negative), we highly encourage you to contact the advising staff. That is one of the reasons we are here, to take feedback from students and work to improve the program for everyone. There are various ways to provide feedback.

The huge benefit of contacting advisors is that we can keep your name confidential, but we can also get back to you on how we have addressed a specific situation. Or we can ask for clarification if we don’t understand something you’ve said.

Alternatively, if you don’t feel comfortable seeing us in person or writing to us individually, we do have an online anonymous feedback form that you are welcome to use. Again, to report things you like or don’t like, about the department.

Just a reminder to apply for the 5th year masters (BS/MS) this weekend if you’re interested.  http://www.cs.washington.edu/prospective_students/bsms/application_information/

Application deadline is June 16th.

Just a quick reminder, if you are doing any paid research, we need to make sure it’s accounted for in your MyCSE profile so we can accurately report cumulative data to the UW on how many students participate in research.  Please go to MyCSE and go to the research tab.  You will “request” paid research (and since you are already doing it, I’m sure your faculty member will agree).  Thank you!

Keep in mind, ANYONE planning to show up to the CSE graduation event this June needs a ticket and we are VERY tight on space.   If you haven’t been receiving these emails, you need to contact Tina Donahue (tinad@cs) so you can get on the graduating student list.  This is only open to graduating students.

Hello, graduating undergraduate and graduate students,

This is a friendly reminder to order tickets for the CSE graduation celebration by Friday (5/30) – you will not be able to order tickets after this date.

Meany Hall requires that anyone entering the theater must have a ticket (this includes the person graduating).

At this point we can only guarantee three tickets (yourself + two guests), but you can request more.  Please be conservative as we have a lot of people to get into the theater.

Extra tickets may be ordered and I’ll let you know as soon as I can how many extra tickets you have after we close the ticket order site on May 30.

We encourage the Ph.D. student to wear UW regalia for the hooding ceremony.  You can order robe, tam, and hood on the UW Commencement site (uwgraduation.com), also linked on the above webpage.  Note the dates for ordering and pickup.

We’ve decided to go ahead and open the BS/MS application (officially).  It’s been open for a week or two as we tested and some of you found it, which is fine, but now it’s really open.

A few notes:

*You may not find a person you want to use as a reference in the drop down menu. If that is the case, it may be that

1. They are a graduate student. In that case, they can email me feedback to include in additional information, but they should not be used as one of your 3 official reference. This is a recent change, if this effects you negatively, let me know and we’ll help you brainstorm.
2. They may be a guest lecturer: in that case, if we still have contact with them, we will try to include them, but it will likely be the same situation as #1.
3. Affiliate faculty: they may not be in our system yet, let me know and I’ll have it updated.

I’m not encouraging anyone to drop a course or change the grade, but a reminder that Sunday is the last day to do that per the rules on the academic calendar.

Keep in mind however, an S graded course can not be used to meet any specific degree requirement, it can only count towards the total credits you need to graduate. And of course an NS results in zero credit.
