We need mentors for new CSE Majors! Welcome night is Wed. Sept. 28th 430pm

Welcome back folks, it’s almost time to kick off the new year!

To do that effectively, we need veteran CSE majors (you have completed at least one quarter in the major) to mentor our new students, and we have a LOT of new majors.  Just over 300 to put things in perspective.  Ideally we’d have at least 75 mentors.  Even with 75, that means everyone will have a small group of mentees, 4-5 each.

Welcome night will be Wednesday, Sept. 28th from 430-630 approximately.  If you can help us out, please fill out the catalyst survey to volunteer.

There will be burritos for those who participate, but the REAL reason to volunteer, is to help all of our new majors learn how welcoming and inclusive this community of undergraduates are here in UW CSE.

Capstone news: Some good, some, not so good

Due to a situation beyond our control (meaning you can complain to advising, but we can’t change it) the Virtual Reality Capstone will not be offered this year. Sadness. Tears. Sorrow…..  sincere condolences.

In better news, *almost everyone* who filled out the capstone survey will receive your first or 2nd choice capstone.  Yay!  The few exceptions are some students graduating in 2017-2018.  I’ll be sending out the assignments shortly, so you should receive an email from me soon.

A few notes:

*Computational Biology capstone was also removed this year, that was determined over the summer but several of you had not heard the news yet

*If you plan to take the NLP capstone, you need to have completed either machine learning or the NLP course before spring

*If you plan to take any of the capstones, you should have completed 332 and ideally a 400 level course or two as it’s intended to “cap” your CSE experience.

*Finally, any and all remaining capstone space will open during regular registration period

Thank you everyone!

PS If you are a graduating student from CE and must have a capstone to graduate and did not fill out the form, contact Crystal at ceney@cs

Capstone Registration is now Open for 2016-2017

Hello everyone!

We hope you are having a great summer. We want to let you all know that CSE Capstone Course enrollment is now open for registration.

Please visit the Capstone Course page for the link to register and more information.  Please note the Security capstone this winter will be twice the average size for a capstone (approximately 48 instead of 24).

https://www.cs.washington.edu/students/ugrad/capstone

Also note that Capstone Registration will close on Sept. 5th, after that, students will register for capstones as space becomes available.

Computer Engineering students are guaranteed a capstone, CS graduating students, we will do the best we can to get you into your first or second choice.

Updating mailing lists

Just a quick note that we are going to be updating mailing lists, so if you’ve graduated, you will no longer see Ugrad posts.  I know how sad this makes you.  🙁

Please do subscribe to our CSE News Blog so you can keep in touch, we really love hearing from our former students.

Low-credit CSE Courses for Fall

Hi CSE majors! Still looking for something to round out your Fall schedule? Here are some more options to consider:

CSE 390P (Problem Solving with Programming) is a course designed to explore applications of programming to problem solving. Each week students will be given a problem (or problems) that should be solved using a combination of critical thinking, problem solving, and skills learned in other CSE courses.  There will occasionally be lectures on topics relevant to solving these problems.  CSE 390P is about applying your programming skills to solving novel, interesting problems.  As a side benefit, we expect the sorts of problems we give to be relevant to interviews and programming competitions. The exact content of the course may vary from quarter to quarter.

For more info and to register, visit: http://tinyurl.com/cse390p-16au. Interest survey will close on Friday 8/19; students will be notified by Friday 9/2.

CSE 495, Vertically Integrated Projects: Earn 1-3 graded credits for group research projects! These credits apply to CSE senior electives. Contact uwtcat@uw.edu to apply. Projects are supervised by Anat Caspi, Director of the Taskar Center for Accessible Technology.
The Vertically Integrated Projects program (VIP) brings project teams together and extends the academic design experience beyond a single quarter. Selected students can participate for up to three years, allowing for growth in both research and leadership.  The VIP project provides the time and context to learn and practice professional skills, to make substantial contributions to a project, and to experience different roles on large multidisciplinary design/discovery teams.

BS/MS (5th year master’s) application now open!

Good Morning! The BS/MS application is now open, linked below.

FYI: You may not find a person you want to use as a reference in the drop down menu. If that is the case, it may be that:

  2. They may be a guest lecturer. In that case, if we still have contact with them we will try to include them.  Contact me with questions.
  3. They may be affiliate faculty and may not be in our system ye. Let me know and I’ll have it updated.

The application is linked from the BS/MS application page: https://www.cs.washington.edu/prospective_students/bsms/application_information/

Here are the timelines for this application cycle.

. . .

Hello, CSE majors! We’re mentally preparing for CSE’s first-ever Peer Advisor Jack to leave us in June, and we need to hire his replacement. If you’re interested in helping students and working with the CSE Advising team, consider applying: Full position description here.

In brief: The CSE Peer Advisor works 8-15 hours per week during the quarter. They counsel individual students, present information, and help with occasional events; meet with high school students (and families), current UW pre-major students, and CSE majors; and discuss academic planning, what computer science/engineering is, CSE admissions, how to prep for industry, and how to connect with opportunities.  Our Peer Advisor brings the incredibly valuable expertise of actually studying computer science or engineering — something none of our professional advisors has done. 🙂

Hiring details:

Application open now, closing Monday May 2, at 10am

Start date: Autumn quarter 2016
Training should take place in Spring and Summer 2016; exact dates are flexible

To apply: Complete the online application here and send a resume to ravena@cs.uw.edu
