How to Navigate the Pros and Cons of Equity Compensation

Hi New Techies,

Ever wanted to know more about stock options and equity but weren’t sure where to start? Look no further! On November 8th, we’ll be hosting an equity compensation workshop to learn about best practices for employees and employers.

This workshop couldn’t come at a better time. Our competitive job market is driving companies to come up with a variety of creative incentives and offers to entice new hires through their doors.

For a company founder, it is easy to understand the benefits of providing stock or stock options to employees. It’s a way of compensating employees that doesn’t drain cash from the business. At the same time, employees feel invested in the future success of the company.

This concept certainly isn’t new, but it’s always good to know the pros and cons. Are stock options worth what they seem? Is there risk? What are the tax implications?

To help us get the most out of this discussion we’re very excited to welcome guest speakers from the law firm Summit Law Group, and Seattle-based CPA and business advisory firm Bader Martin. Here is a sneak peek at the kind of expertise our panelists bring to the table.

  • Avoid the major compensation pitfalls: exceeding plan limits, poor documentation, failure to obtain 409A valuation, etc.
  • Learn about the various forms of equity compensation: Options, RSUs, SARs, restricted stock, performance compensation awards, etc.
  • Discuss what happens to your equity awards if you change careers
  • Find out what your stock options are worth
  • The pros and cons of using equity as compensation
  • How does it all work? Required corporate approvals, plan administration, etc.
  • When are stock options taxable and at what rate? When are they deductible to the company?
  • How does alternative minimum tax apply to exercise and hold transactions and later sales?
  • Some tax considerations with qualified small business stock
  • When do I need to consider an §83(b) election?
  • How do the various types of stock based compensation interact?
