Hi,
I am a PhD student from College of Education. I am looking for CS/CSE major undergraduates to assist in our research project. The project uses state, district, and federal databases to examine a number of critical educational policy issues, such as improving the lowest performing schools and addressing educational inequality. The position will provide students with opportunities to work with our project team to manage large-scale administrative data and textual data.
We are now hiring two positions. If candidates have expertise for both positions, it is possible to combine these two positions.
Position 1: Textual Data Management and Extraction
We have over 2,200 reports, which contain rich textual data on school management, reform implementation, and tasks. We are looking for an undergraduate research assistant who can help
- (a) use PDF converter to transform these reports into plain texts or excel
- (b) use Python or other coding program to convert these data into a longitudinal database that can be used for Natural Language Processing (NLP);
- (c) if the student is able to or interested to learn, then conduct Structural Topic Modeling or other analysis of the textual data.
Position 2: Data Management
We are inviting an undergrad student to join our team to help with data cleaning and management. The responsibilities of this student will include:
- (a) basic training on large-scale data management, such as coding variables, merging datasets etc.
- (b) competency in the use of statistical software, including STATA, R, etc
- (c) basic statistics.
