THANKS for Affiliates!!

Thanks to all of you for the phenomenal turnout for Affiliates — the
talks on Wednesday afternoon, the posters/demos on Wednesday evening,
and the job fair on Thursday.

We had more than 200 local alums join our affiliates for the
posters/demos on Wednesday evening — students from all degree
programs (bachelors, masters, professional masters, and doctorate) and
all years (I saw folks from as early as 1971 and as recent as last
year).  It was a home run evening.

Today, just about EVERY recruiter said this was the best job fair they
had attended this year — far better than Berkeley’s or Stanford’s,
for example.  Two reasons:  First, it’s just CSE (these companies want
computer scientists and computer engineers); second, UW CSE students
really knocked their socks off.

Thanks again!!

Divvy — a company *not* to work for!

Divvy was at the SEBA job fair on Wednesday.  They are *not* part of
the CSE affiliates program, and will *not* be present on Thursday.

It’s too late to tell this company, in person, what you think of this
sort of offensive degrading sophomoric nonsense.  But it’s not too
late to vote with your feet.  If you go to work at a company like
this, you get what you deserve.  Don’t do it.

Kay

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but apparently Divvy is going to
have women with bikini’s on at the UW Show.. aka bikini babes to
attract attention.

In my humble opinion..very tacky … and more so not appropriate.

They were looking for folks on craigslist.

Here is the link.

“Smart Grid” adds substantial IT “smarts” to bring digital intelligence, real-time communications, and control throughout the power system to operate the electricity-supply grid as never before.  This is interdisciplinary work at its best–a cutting edge discussion of how clean-tech, engineering, policy, and business models are intertwined and why it’s important to understand the implications of each.

Preparing for Industry: Course Advice from Faculty

Hey CSE Students!

To help plan your courses, CSE faculty complied a page of ‘course advice’ for specialized career paths (this is the page that was was mentioned during the pizza lunch with the chair). Linked here, this information was created by faculty and posted by the advisors, with the intention of providing you all with a better understanding of what courses will help prepare you for specific areas/fields in computer science and beyond.

As this is a new effort, please send your feedback (especially positive feedback!) about the helpfulness of this page to ugrad-advisor@cs.

Accessibility Capstone Design Course Winter 2011

From Professor Richard Ladner:

Dear Undergraduates,

In winter quarter 2011 the Accessibility Capstone Design Course will be offered for the second time.  Please see the web page

http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/courses/cse481h/10wi/

to view the previous offering of the course.  The offering this time will be similar, but the projects will be new.  You should also look at the KOMO TV story about the course to give you an idea what students did last year.

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/87737592.html

Again, in 2011, students will design, implement, and test smart phone accessibility applications on the Android platform.

In preparation for the class there will be a one-month non-credit short course starting the week of November 8th at a time to be determined.  The short course will cover Android development and an introduction to access technology for people with disabilities.  Students in the short course will be able to keep an Android phone over the holiday to become more familiar with the development environment.  There will also be some reading to prepare for the class. The short course is not a requirement, but is highly recommended.

Please fill out the catalyst questionnaire below by November 1st if you are interested in this capstone design course.

https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/ladner/114582

Thank you,

Richard Ladner
