Subject: [cs-ugrads] UW vs Cornell Competition

As some of you know a heated competition between UW and Cornell has started: who will build a full 3D replica of the campus first.  So far Cornell is trampling all over us, and there are only 13 days left.  I’m hoping you can help us with the comeback by playing at

http://photocitygame.com/competition.php

or with the iPhone app http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photocity/id341994556

There are trophy replicas of the buildings, T-shirts and general bragging rights at stake.

UW Information Sessions, NAE Seattle Summit and Poster Competition

Dear engineering students and faculty,

Please stop by any time during one of the information sessions listed below to learn about the National Academy of Engineers Grand Challenges Summit Series and student poster competition to be held in Seattle May 2nd and 3rd hosted by the University of Washington. Hundreds of engineers, scientists, innovators, and students from nine U.S. states and British Columbia will be attending this regional conference. Please stop by and learn more. http://www.engr.washington.edu/news/nae10/index.html

The purpose in holding these information sessions is to help engineering students learn about how to participate in the conference and how to register for the poster competition held on May 2nd. The competition would be an opportunity for students to gain national exposure for engineering research and/or designs.

The Seattle Summit is focused on two of the fourteen Grand Challenges identified by the National Academy of Engineering: “Engineer better medicines” and “Engineer the tools of scientific discovery”. As an engineering student, my goal is to increase student participation in a conference that brings engineers together – across all disciplines and universities to address the engineering challenges of our time.

Information Sessions:

Thursday, April 8th, 4:00pm to 5:00pm in the Electrical Engineering Building (EEB) 403
Monday, April 12th, 11:30am to 12:30pm, in the Deans Conference Room, Loew 355
Tuesday, April 13th, 5:30pm to 6:30pm in ABC McCarty Hall

Want a Microsoft Surface in the CSE building?

Hey everyone,

We’re in the process of writing a proposal to buy several Microsoft Surface units with Student Techfee funds, for students to use for collaboration, and for exploration and development of personal projects. Does this sound like something you’d be willing to support? We’re looking for several short (1-2 paragraph) letters of support to be included in our STF proposal. We’re collecting responses at the following Catalyst survey:

https://catalysttools.washington.edu/webq/survey/acm/99924

We need responses by Wednesday (tomorrow!) morning, so if you’re interested, please find some time to write a letter tonight.

Thanks,
Your friendly neighborhood ACM officers

Demos for Direct Admission Visit Day – April 16th

Hi all,
Each year we admit a small number of incoming freshmen directly into the CSE undergraduate program through our DA program. On Friday, April 16th, we will host an afternoon “visit day” for these students and their parents. A significant piece of the visit is breaking the visitors into small groups and having them rotate through two demos and building tours from 4-5:30pm. Each year we’ve had really interesting, hands-on/interactive demos (recents include RFID, HCI lab, Photo Tourism, FoldIt, WebAnywhere, etc.), and it’d be great to have another fantastic line-up for them again this year.

This means I’m putting out the call for volunteers! If you are interested in participating in this event with a research or class project demo, please let me know. We’d love to have your help in impressing the prospective students and their parents.
Thanks!
Megan
