Coke Closet

Hi everyone,

The Coke Closet is almost back! We just need $80 to reach our $400 goal.

We’ll (Aryan Naraghi and Noe Khalfa) be around the labs tomorrow to
accept contributions. You can also drop a check made out to “UW ACM”
in locker 115 in the basement of the Electrical Engineering Building.

If we meet our goal by Monday night, the Coke Closet will be stocked
as early as Wednesday!

Regards,

Aryan Naraghi and Noe Khalfa

____________________________________________________________________________

Dear ACM Member,

May 12th marks the first National Lab Day, a partnership of more than 200
industry and non-profit organizations and volunteers. This year-round effort
is designed to bring high-quality, hands-on science, technology,
engineering, mathematics and computer science education experiences to
middle and high school students.

National Lab Day is seeking volunteers from the ACM community to be paired
with local K-12 teachers through the NLD website. Learn more and sign up to
search the NLD interactive map to find projects for your skills, timeframe
and location at:

http://www.nationallabday.org/groups/acm

Currently, nearly 50 teacher-identified computer science projects and
hundreds of other discipline-specific projects needing volunteers are
listed. Your commitment could be as little as a few hours but it is critical
to NLD’s success. Volunteer opportunities cover a wide range from mentoring,
to helping design and implement hands-on projects, to identifying computing
resources.

Please join in this nationwide movement to support active teaching, inspire
children, and build long-term relationships between science professionals
and the K-12 classroom.

ACM Chief Executive Officer

Cameron Wilson
ACM Director of Public Policy

P.S. ACM led a joint effort to establish the first Computer Science
Education Week last December with CSTA, NCWIT, CRA, and the support of
Google Inc., Intel, and Microsoft. CSEDWeek demonstrates the strength of the
national STEM education movement, of which National Lab Day is a part. Learn

In case you hadn’t already heard the news:

http://techcrunch.com/2010/05/05/there-goes-the-neighborhood-facebook-to-open-seattle-office/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed:+Techcrunch+(TechCrunch)

There I was thinking I was such a trendsetter by moving to Seattle. But apparently other people had the same idea, because Facebook is opening an office up here, too. A handful of engineers, led by Ari Steinberg, are making the move up here to open an engineering office, says Facebook. They are looking for office space now and expect to have 30 engineers here within a year.

Also of note – Seattle-based Hadi Partovi, the cofounder of iLike and a former MySpace executive, is joining Facebook as an advisor and will help the office recruit new talent. I can imagine MySpace Seattle engineers will be working on their resumes this morning.

Two weeks ago Facebook announced the opening of an office in Austin focusing on sales and operations. Other than a small engineering team based in Tokyo this is Facebook’s first engineering office outside of their Palo Alto headquarters.

The Coke Closet

Hey everyone, If you want to help revive the coke closet you need to get the money in to Aryan Naraghi or Noe Khalfa as soon as possible. It’s close, but we just need a few more contributors and the more people who join in, the more food and drinks we can have ready for the rest of the quarter, especially finals week. We will be hanging around the labs 002, 0022, 003 and 006 tomorrow, Friday, from 12:30 to 2:30 pm. We are accepting cash or checks of $20, or $10 if you can’t do $20. We prefer checks made out to “UW ACM”. At the end of the quarter all money made will be refunded. So, if you want to help save the coke closet don’t forget to bring cash or check tomorrow to one of the labs!

Thanks,

Noé Khalfa

Ronald E. McNair App Deadline Extended to May 14th

The Ronald E. McNair Program is pleased to announce that the deadline for the 2010-2011 academic year competition has been extended to 5pm on May 14th.  Please forward this message to appropriate units working with talented undergraduates.

The link to the pdf application is available here: http://depts.washington.edu/uwmcnair/McNair2010.pdf.

Program Purpose
The Ronald E. McNair Program prepares undergraduates for doctoral study through involvement in research and scholarly activities. The purpose of the McNair Program is to assist in the academic and professional development of undergraduates whose goals are to teach and research at the college level. In order to help students achieve those goals, the program sponsors and supports undergraduate experiences that lay the foundation for a successful graduate school experience. By fostering mentoring relationships, promoting undergraduate research, assisting with GRE preparation, and encouraging students to attend and present at conferences, we aim to produce highly competitive graduate school applicants who have the skills and experiences necessary to succeed in their programs.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to apply for the McNair Program, you must meet the following eligibility criteria, set by the Department of Education. Because this is a federally funded program, these are strict requirements.

To be eligible, you:

  • must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

  • must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate in a degree program at the UW
  • must have completed 36 credits by the time of initial entry into the program
  • must have at least one year remaining before graduation (i.e., if you are graduating within the year, you are not eligible for the program)
  • must have a minimum cumulative GPA of: 2.8 (sophomores), 3.0 (juniors), 3.2 (seniors)
  • must have STRONG desire to attain a Ph.D.
