Please share the scholarship information below with undergraduate students in all fields planning to study abroad this winter or spring quarter 2011 and who have financial need. 12 UW students were selected to receive this competitive national scholarship during the last application cycle!

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and is open to U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to all U.S. citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below:

* The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad.
* The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student’s accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
* The applicant is studying abroad for at least four weeks in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least four consecutive weeks.
* The applicant is studying abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the U.S. Department of State’s current Travel Warning list.

The current application cycle is for scholarships to support study abroad programs beginning between December 15, 2010 and April 15, 2011. This cycle encompasses spring semester, quarter, calendar year, winter inter-session and January term programs that are a minimum of four weeks in length. Applications for this cycle are due October 5, 2010.

Change Seminar – Autumn Quarter

Hello Everyone,
In preparation for the fall quarter, I wanted to invite you all to attend in the one credit Change Seminar on Thursdays at noon in the Paul Allen Center (Room 203).

Change (http://change.washington.edu) is a group of faculty, students, and staff at the UW who are exploring the role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in improving the lives of underserved populations, particularly in the developing world.  We are cover topics such as global health, education, micro finance, agricultural development, and general communication, and look at how technology can be used to improve each of these areas.

This fall we will be alternating between talks by invited speakers and group discussions.  Those who sign up for credit will be asked to participate in leading one of the discussions (this requires very little work and can be done in groups).  We are in the process of scheduling speakers, so stay tuned to our calendar (http://is.gd/3PkTF), Twitter (http://is.gd/3PkVk), or mailing list (http://is.gd/3PlkS) for more information.
Please consider enrolling (CSE590C1, SLN: 12384).  If you are unable to enroll, feel free to come to any of the meetings you are interested in attending! The seminar is available for all UW students and the content is designed to be widely accessible. We encourage students from all departments to enroll/attend if interested.

Please forward this message to the relevant mailing lists, and we hope to see you on Thursday October 1 at noon in Room 203 of the Paul Allen Center.

Thanks,
Nell O’Rourke

Engineering Co-op Program – info for students

Our Mission
The Engineering Cooperative Education Program (Co-Op) partners with industry to offer degree-related work experience for highly qualified, motivated students. Students gain practical training and professional experience while maintaining their full-time student status and increasing their competitiveness for that first job after graduation while employers have the opportunity to evaluate prospective future employees. Students completing a Co-Op job graduate with work experience and are more likely to have a job at graduation,  a shorter job-hunt period and have higher earning potential within 5 years of graduation.

What is Co-Op?
A Co-Op job is a paid engineering-related position working in industry. For work experience to qualify as a Co-Op job it must be a paid position that is 50% or more engineering related work and registered through the Co-Op program. Benefits of Co-Op include maintaining full-time student status while working full-time (but not attending classes) and paying only a small Co-Op fee instead of full tuition.  Co-Op jobs last 3, 6 or 9 months. Most Co-Op jobs are full-time and employers hire students to work at a variety of locations in the U.S. and abroad. There are several ways to find a Co-Op job, and our office is here to help.  All engineering and pre-engineering students have access to the Co-Op online job search tool, eRecruiting, which lists job openings, but students are encouraged to use ALL their resources to find a Co-Op job.

Eligibility Requirements
Full-time students pursuing engineering at the UW Seattle campus are eligible to participate in Co-Op.  F-1 Visa holders are also eligible through “Curricular Practical Training” (CPT).

If you are looking for a Co-Op position, try our eRecruiting online job search tool.  To qualify, students must meet the requirements listed below.  (If you have not yet met the requirements you can still search for jobs, but you will need to contact the Co-Op office to assist you in the application process.)
•    Completed at least one academic quarter at the UW to establish a UW gpa
•    Must return to campus for one quarter after completing the Co-Op job prior to graduation
•    Be matriculated full-time (12 credits for undergraduates and 10 credits for graduates) and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
•    Completed or enrolled in Math 126 and Physics 121, or  Math 126 and Chemistry 142
(HCDE Majors only: Have completed Math 124 and Physics 114 OR Math 124 and Chemistry 120)

Benefits to Students
•    Graduate WITH engineering experience!
•    Gain professional skills not taught in the classroom.
•    Average Co-Op salary is over $18 per hour
•    Access to current Co-Op job postings from employers hiring students year-round
•    Learn resume, interviewing and job search skills from experienced Co-Op advisers
•    Receive information about upcoming networking events, employer information sessions, and career fairs
•    Make personal connections that could lead to full-time employment after graduation

How to Get Started
1.    Access your online eRecruiting account: http://www.engr.washington.edu/curr_students/coop/
2.    Let us know how we can help you find your  Co-Op job:  engrcoop@uw.edu or call 206-685-0830.

We look forward to working with you!
