Email from Cynthia Matuszek advertising the NSF Essay Review this Friday:
This Friday at noon, we’ll be having an essay proof-reading session in CSE 403. Bring a few copies of your essays if you get a chance; or, if they’re not done, bring whatever you have, and let fellow students offer help on getting finished.
Or, if nothing else, come and proofread!
Last year’s applicants found this session helpful, so don’t miss it. Remember, essays are due to NSF next Wednesday.
* WHERE: CSE 403
* WHEN: Fri 10/31, 12:00pm – 1:30pm
* BRING: Your NSF essays or parts thereof
* COSTUME REQUIRED: No
We’re unlikely to score leftover Indian this time, so feel free to bring food if that’s your lunchtime.

Is graduate school in your future?
For many undergrads, graduate school is a bit of a mystery. Students often wonder if it’s the right next step for them and have questions about what it means to go, how to prepare as an undergrad, what the application process is like, and how they will afford tuition (don’t worry, many schools pay!). Whether you are in the process of applying now, or are simply considering graduate school as a possibility later on, don’t miss your opportunity to learn more about what graduate study entails and what you should be doing now to get ready to apply. Professor Luis Ceze and two new CSE graduate students will be our panelists. The graduate advisors will also be there to help answer questions.
Light refreshments will be served (think sandwiches, salads, desserts)

***Please note that this session is geared toward students looking at Ph.D. programs and terminal master’s programs. It is not a session on the new Combined B.S/M.S. 5th year master’s program.
OK, so there’s been a little trouble in the economy recently. Hiring may be reduced at some companies. This gives you even more reason to polish your resume, attend these two career fairs, and meet some recruiters!
A little encouragement from Ed Lazowska: “Our experience is that the students who have strong records and market themselves and are open-minded about a variety of companies continue to do well. The students who expect jobs to fall into their laps from employers desperate for talent do not.” Be one of the prepared students! Read on for fair details. (more…)
We want to visit some local high schools this year, to recruit and inform potential UW CSE students. If you’ve had a positive experience in the department and would like to share it with high school students, please email me at ravena@cs. (more…)

Smoothie Day will take place at 3:30 Friday in CSE 303, with smoothies and selected favorites from one of the very best geek-tv shows, The IT Crowd.
ACM needs volunteers to help make the smoothies (particularly those who have volunteered in the past, and can teach others how to make them!). Those who are interested, meet in the ACM Lounge at 2:30. You can even dish yourself up a smoothie, in exchange for volunteering
.
See you tomorrow!
